Final CUt Pro Rendering Incorrectly in Timeline and on Output
I am the associate editor on a feature film here in Portland, and currently the primary steward for the film’s progress as the head editor is now off of the project.
Here is the problem: Final Cut Pro is incorrectly rendering audio. We are creating mixes within our scene sequences, music, sfx, vox, etc. Then creating a nested sequence for the full length version of the film. Inside the individual scenes, final cut regularly plays audio incorrectly, either cutting out, playing audio that is not in the timeline, ignoring automation, jumping around in volume, etc. I have found quick fixes by deleting audio render files, bring audio clips back in from bin, and re-drawing automation.
NOW: Final Cut Pro, on outputting quicktimes has begun to screw up long segments of audio in the output. The subsequent quicktime will have audio drop outs that last for nearly twenty minutes, with blips and crackles and audio jumps. I go back to the sequence and everything plays fine. These errors are embedded into the quicktime, before compression and after.
About the project: All footage was shot as RED 4K, then rendered into Apple ProRes Proxy files for an offline edit. Dialog/On set recording was done in-camera and output as .wav along with the RED conversions using Final Cut log and transfer. Music is Linear PCM .aif’s. SFX are .wav’s taken from a SFX library. Sequence is 2048x 1152, Pro Res Proxy, 48k audio with 24 bit depth.
The mac is a Power Mac running OS X.5.8. 16 gig RAM, 2 x 2.8 quad Intel Processor.
Final Cut Version: 7.0.2
Can anyone help me trouble-shoot this problem? If I cannot trust FCP to render audio correctly, I’m going to be watching a two hour film every time we do a work in progress output. Thank you!
