I have a couple of quick question regarding a new project I’m about to edit. Let me just preface this with this is my first HD project so I want to get it right the first time around, I think you understand. So here goes:

I just got this back from the DP on this film who will be transferring the footage. He’s shooting with the HVX200:

“we’ll be shoot 1080.24P. your footage will end up as 1080, 30i. footage will be transfered to firewire 800 hard drive for you. you need final cut pro HD to edit it.”

I’m running FCP 5 so I’m not worried about that, actually waiting for the crossgrade in the mail any day now. I’m dealing with a pretty basic workstation but capable. You can see here:

    https://www.thissavageart.com/studio/

I’m curious what my Project Settings will be for this project? I have a pretty good idea but I want to check with those who have been there. Do I just go with Easy Setup for a DVCPRO HD 1080i60? Any alterations?

    My Sequence Settings?

Which brings me to my next issue, monitoring. I don’t have a HD monitor and I’m only working with one 23″ Cinema Display and a Sony 14L2, which for this project is rendered useless. Any suggestions on how I approach this? I would like to color correct this but an accurate color correction without a capable monitor is not realistic. What are my options?

Thanks in advance for any help than can be supplied.

    William

Inform your DP that he must use the 1080/24pA setting, and not the 1080/24P setting. That will help your workflow quite a bit.

And use FCP 5.1.1 at a bare minimum, 5.1.2 would be much better (as soon as it’s released, which should be within the next three weeks). FCP 5.1.2 has, I believe, a 1080/24pA easy setup which will make this whole process extremely simple.

What will your final delivery be? 1080p 23.98? 1080i 59.94? This determines a lot in how you capture and work with your footage.

If you are delivering HD then you need an HD monitor. The cheapest you can get is the PVM 14L5, but it is no longer for sale new at many places. So you will have to look at used places and E-Bay…or look at more expensive models or to rent one for a week. Also, you will need an HD Capture Card to send a proper signal to the monitor.

Barry – thanks for the tips.

Shane – I would like to keep as much of a film look as possible so I would like to keep it at 1080p 23.98.

After seeing the specs from the DP:

“we’ll be shoot 1080.24P. your footage will end up as 1080, 30i”

I’m assuming he means 1080i60??? I’m not sure about this so forgive my ignorance but can you capture 1080p 23.98 footage from the P2 cards onto a drive and remain 23.98? I’m just curious why he is putting it on a drive at 30 when I can edit on a 23.98 timeline in FCP, less stress on the processor. Like I said not sure, just asking.

I will not be delivering, I don’t have the hardware or the cash to drop right now for it, that will be a future buy. What I will be doing is upon completion of the edit I will hand a drive over to a post house to master to a DigiBeta probably.

Well, heed what Barry said, shoot 1080 24PN. This means that the footage will 23.98…not 30i or 60i. It is recorded on the card at 24 actual FPS.

Did you edit on a 23.98 timeline with the projects you have done in the past? If so how did it work out? If not what was the deciding factor?

(Sorry I haven’t read all the entries from your site but I will!)

The show I just edited was all 23.98. Well, some footage was 720p60 at 59.94, but I either slowed it down using the DVCPRO HD Framerate Converter for GREAT slow motion, or dropped it into the timeline and rendered and it worked out fine.

Since I delivered a 1080p 23.98 master, it all worked out fine. And the downconvert to digitbea was perfect.

Not exactly — that only applies for 720 mode.

For 1080 mode it’ll always record 60 fields. The difference is, if you use 1080/24pA, FCP can strip out the pulldown and then the file on your hard disk will be 23.976p and not 30i or 60i. During the FCP import the conversion happens and the duplicate fields are discarded.

That brings us back to the beginning. When I import the 23.976p files from the hard drive what will my A/V settings be for FCP? In the version I have, 5.0.4, there is no choice in the A/V Settings pulldown menu for a 1080p24.

Do I just manual create an Easy Setup or is there a preset with 5.1 which I will be receiving by mail any day now?

Take a 1080i60 DVCPRO HD sequence preset and go to Sequence -> Settings.

Change the Editing Ttimebase to 23,98.
The Feld Dominance will switch to None.

If you use a BMD or AJA video card you can monitor 24p to a NTSC monitor.

Go to Final Cut Pro -> System Settings -> Playback Control
Set the Pulldown Pattern to 2:3:2:3
Set up your video card inside the AJA or BMD control panels.
