  • Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 and Canon XL-H1 issues

Posted by Doug Cook on May 19, 2006 at 9:54 pm

    Hello –

I’m just about to start shooting with the Canon XL-H1 and currently running Final Cut Pro HD 4.5. I’ve
never captured HD footage before with Final Cut HD 4.5, does anybody know if it will capture or do I
have to buy Final Cut 5.1?

    Thanks,
    Doug

I believe that you will have to get FCP 5 in order to capture HDV, which is what that camera uses.

I checked on the capture presets in Final Cut Pro 4.5 and it offers the foloowing, will any of them work
with capturing HDV from Canon XL-H1? I plan on shooting 720p24 (16X9).

You can’t capture 720P 24 on the Canon. you can capture 1080 24F. FCP 4.5 doesn’t support HDV on the Canon and even 5.1 doesn’t support the 24F mode over firewire, however if you have an HD capture card you can capture 24F via HD SDI.

So …. I could shoot with the XL-H1 at 1080 24F and capture to Final Cut 5.1 through firewire, is this correct?

No you can’t – you would need an HD SDI capture card.
