  • Final Cut Pro and JVC GY-HM100 problems. Help needed.

    Hello Creative COWs

Sorry to be new around here and come in begging for help, but some friends suggested that I try you before losing all hope.

I recently lashed out and bought a nice JVC pro camera. I had been using FCE before but it won’t support the JVC so was forced to buy FCP. Only thing is, it doesn’t work. I’ve had two very frustrating days with it and about to give up. I have spent hours on the phone with apple pro support, but no joy. This is my last attempt before I bail on it…

Major Problem: Not being able to export movies from Final Cut Pro.

    Camera: JVC GY-HM100
    Computer: MacPro 2 x 2.8 Quad Core, 4GB RAM
    OS: 10.5.8
    FCP: 7.0.1
I have downloaded the plug in from JVC and installed.

    Problems:
    • If I try and “share” (from file menu) in any format I get an error message saying that “FCP generated an error or unexpectedly quit”.
    • If I try to export using Quick Time it takes infinite time – and by looking at activity monitor I can see that two processes are crashing (turning red and saying Not Responding) – CompressorTranscoder & CompressorJobControl. They often don’t crash right away, but after about 20-30 mins of doing sfa.
    • Sometimes other processes called Compressord or qmordqd? appear and crash (turning red and saying Not Responding)
    • If I try sending to compressor then I get the same as above.

What I have tried so far (on recommendation from apple).
    • Re-starting (obviously)
    • Made a new user and tried same tests. Same results.
    • Removed the JVC Plug in. Same results.
    • Trashed the preferences for FCP and Compressor (used DigitalRebellion tool). No difference.
    • Used the Compressor Repair tool from DigitalRebellion. No difference.
    • Tried importing old footage from older camera (imported from DV tape in FCE months ago). Same results.

I did manage to get a file exported that I left overnight using the export using QT conversion. I guess that the CompressorTranscoder etc had crashed but I didn’t know to look for them at that stage. But it won’t load into YouTube – I just get told there is an error. That file is a full HD file and is 38 minutes long (2.5 GB).

But all tests have been done with a full HD clip that was 10 seconds long so I could test without a 6+ hour wait!.

I’m at my wits end with this thing and wishing I had never ventured down the HD route. I make guitar videos for YouTube not feature films and wish I stuck to SD.

Anyway – if you think of anything then please let me know.

    How about:

Did you do a ‘repair permissions’ on the sys drive?

When did you go from FCE to FCP. Is this an upgrade from FCE to FCP6 to FCP7, and did you do a clean install, or just upgrade from 6 to 7? Or install FCP7 on same drive that FCE is on?
A clean install is very important to a stable system.

Maybe 4GB of RAM isn’t quite enough to work in HD?

Are you putting your media on the sys drive? What type of media drive are you running?

    Thanks for the response.

Yes I repaired permissions for the sys drive. I got some messages I had not seen before, can’t recall exact wording but close to:

WARNING: SUID Files were modified and not repaired.
    usr/bin/rsh
    usr/bin/rlogin
    usr/bin/quota
    usr/sbin/pppd
    usr/sbin/uprid

I have FCE 4 on my system. I purchased a full FCP7 and installed it on the same drive. It was not an upgrade.

The media is going from the HDSC card onto a Lacie Quadra 500Gb 7200rpm external drive which is connected by eSata (going into a eSata PCI card).

The computer is in my recording studio and installed are audio applications, Pro Tools HD, Logic, which both seem uneffected by all this other polava.

    Thanks, J

If you are able to open and edit the clips in FC, there is nothing wrong with the JVC plugin.

[Justin Sandercoe] “• If I try to export using Quick Time it takes infinite time – and by looking at activity monitor I can see that two processes are crashing (turning red and saying Not Responding) – CompressorTranscoder & CompressorJobControl. They often don’t crash right away, but after about 20-30 mins of doing sfa.
    • Sometimes other processes called Compressord or qmordqd? appear and crash (turning red and saying Not Responding) “

This hang can be temporal, but the letters remains in red. If its really hangs, you get the ball spinning.
In the Activity Monitor> Disk Use, look if there is reading/writing going on.

    Thanks Rafael

So the red Not Responding may not be a proper hang. I had noticed that these was still activity in disk and the amount of threads and memory was changing…

Could the plug in be effecting the compressor? I can get the files into FCP and edit fine, the export seems to be the problem!

    Justin,
The plugin is to let you play the files.
If it wasn’t be working you would have no picture.
I don’t know what are you rendering, but take it easy.
I always get the “Compressor Job Controller” and “Compressor Transcoder” in red, but keeps working.
If you see that there is reading and writing, things are going on.

I found this about the sys permissions. https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 “You can safely ignore these messages. You can also usually ignore any “ACL found but not expected…” message. These messages can occur if you change permissions on a file or directory. These messages are accurate but are generally not a cause for concern.”

So I don’t think that’s an issue. Did you try wiping FCP 4 and 7 both and then just installing 7? I don’t think the JVC plugin is causing this.

    Hi Kylee

Not tried removing FCE 4 yet – I didn’t think they would conflict being different programs.

Is there a good chance that there could be a conflict between them? Seems a lot of work but I would give it a go if there was a good chance that that is the problem…

    Appreciate your advice, J
