Final Cut on an iBook?
Hi all,
Had a quick question about my new (used) iBook G4 (1.33 GHz Power PC/512 RAM/Panther 10.3.9).
I’m a video editor who uses Avid Media Composer at work, but I was hoping to get an older and cheaper version of Final Cut to mess around with, and get a feel for the program.
Are there versions of Final Cut that will run on an iBook? Final Cut Express?
Would I need to upgrade my OS? Add more RAM?
Like I said, I just want to use this for messing around. I would probably edit existing QTs, so I wouldn’t need to capture any footage.
Any advice? Thanks in advance

As long as we are talking DV, just give it a bit more RAM and FCP 4.5.x (the latest) and you are set. You can even capture with it.

wow, 4.5? I thought I would definitely have to get an older version of Express. In fact, I still might just for the cost savings…
Would Express be an adequate facsimile of what I might find on the job market? Like I said, I use Avid, and more and more the jobs that come up are looking for FCP users. I just wanted to get comfortable with the interface.
I’ll definitely double the RAM.

Oops, sorry, I meant Final Cut Pro 4.5.x , not Final Cut Express (which is only at 4.0 right now).
The basic rule to go by is using the software version that was up-to-date when the hardware was current. With FCP 4.5 (alias FCP-HD) you could even handle DVCProHD quite OK (but not HDV). While FCE is offering most of the features that FCP has, I think that one thing for any serious pro is missing: logging plus batch capture.
So, better get yourself a license of FCP 4.5.

Sorry for the confusing reply earlier — I knew you meant FC Pro, I was just assuming that I would have to use Express (which would actually be my preference).
Logging/batching (capturing in general) isn’t really a concern for me right now.

That’s the info that I’m having trouble finding — I don’t know what was up-to-date when Panther was current.
