June 12, 2005 at 1:08 amHi,
Apple is currently selling this refurbed single 1.6 on the “SAVE Special Deals Page” for: $1,199.00
Power Mac G5 1.6 GHz 256MB/ 80GB/ SuperDrive/ GigE/ 56K – Apple Certified RefurbishedIf you are patient (keep checking early in the morning) you can get a refurbed (full warranty) Dual 1.8 G5 for $1,499. For an extra $300 its a no brainer.
Another source is to call local Apple stores and see what they have in discontinued demo models (full warranty).
Best Wishes,
Mitch

June 12, 2005 at 3:35 amI had not thought about a refurbished Dual G5 . I will check on that . Again this is primarely for learning the software but if I could pick up a refurb dual for about the same price that might be a way to go . As for not going back to Avid after using FCP , I’m not looking to give one up for the other . As a freelancer I have use what the production companies have in house .

June 12, 2005 at 5:08 amThis thread sounds you are all attending a wake. What will Microsoft use as their next processor? My goodness, Jimmy was a good processor, but who knows how good his son will be. FCP will be as good, or as bad, as it has been in days past, or in the future. I can

That’s what happens when a thread morphs from its original theme – in this case: What’s the basic hardware requirement for simply (and unpainfully) LEARNING the Production Suite? -

What’s the CHP? Not trying to be a smartass, just never read that abbreviation before.

June 12, 2005 at 9:03 amIf you want to run Motion, you really need a fast machine and video display card… but that said, the single 1.8 would let you learn, but once you do, you’ll be wanting a faster machine I think. At least there’s resale in Mac’s though, so it wouldn’t cost you much to use it for a while, then resell it.
I also think that waiting for the Intel based Mac like it will be a ton faster next (I seriously doubt it) year is like saying I don’t want a fast machine now, I want a slightly faster yet machine later… this will be the case no matter when you buy any computer, so why not start with one that will last you a few years? I think what I’m saying is a dual 2.3 machine would be a much better investment and will be a long term one to boot. Nothing says you HAVE to upgrade to FCP 6 or 7 when it comes out either… Most all of the folk who really study these things like the Intel Apple deal, are saying to look for single processor Macs (portables, and minis) to get the chips first and only early 2006, and that the roadmap of the Intel chips really points at dual core processor G6? machines late in 2007… There’s still room for speed on the G5 IBM chips too I think in the mean time, so it really isn’t going to be a quantum leap in power don’t think, rather a gradual speed up just as we’ve seen for the last few years in PC’s and Macs. There really was a quantum leap in speed between the G4 and G5 chips but don’t think we are going to see this happen again anytime soon, even with the Intel chips coming down the line..
Except for the PowerBook G4. (and maybe the mini’s…. depends on which chip is put in them) When we seen the Intel chipped PB come out, we’ll finally see the “G5” chipped portable we’ve all been waiting for. From what I’m reading around the Net, Apple will deliver this puppy long before we see PowerMac’s with intel chips in them.

Hi Jerry,
Buying a very expensive system and keeping it a few years can cost more than buying a less expensive system and upgrading every 12 to 24 month’s. With the more frequent upgrade approach you will be smiling after the first upgrade.
I think there could very well be a quantum leap with the first Intel Powermacs (once the software is optimized which might take a while for some programs). Intel will probably spend billions on desktop CPU R and D over the next two years. How much do you think IBM will spend?

Hi,

June 12, 2005 at 6:59 pmWell lets see here… 1100 for used system replaced 3 times in 3 years costs probably a loss of 2200… so spending the same now would be 3300, then after three years it’s worth about the same as the one you bought last… 1100 so it’s the same. Why go thru the headache of buying used, wondering if the system is OK then reselling it? Plus you get the advantage of superspeed from the get go.
