  • Final Cut HD Issues (after reinstall of OSX)

Hello, I work for a post-production company, and we’ve got a G5 with Final Cut Studio. Recently, we were looking to get our computer up to the latest-and-greatest specs.

I sent for the crossgrade for Final Cut Studio 5.1 and I noticed that it required Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.4. So I ran a software update, and updated my computer. That’s when I started noticing software crahing left and right. Nearly half of the software on my computer crashed with Kernel errors.

I searched on forums online, and found two possible suspects. Bad RAM and the update to 10.4.4. I did a hardware test on the RAM and it said that they were faulty, so I went out and bought new Kingston DDR 3200 DIMM 512MB sticks (2 of them). I installed those along with 2 of the 4 that I had that were not faulty. So now I have 4 512mb sticks that the hardware test said were fine.

But I was still getting kernel crashes, so I went to our startup disk and did a reinstall of Mac Tiger 10.4. The computer has been fine since then, and all of my files were fine. But some drivers and codecs were missing, most noticably for my Blackmagic DeckLink Extreme. I went to the BlackMagic site and downloaded their drivers package, and I was able to view all my Final Cut Sequences, as well as log and capture again.

But, it turns out, only for SD. Somewhere down the line, I lost HD abilities. I tried plugging my HD deck into the G5 through FireWire, but when I run Log and Capture, I get the error that I don’t have the right codecs installed.

I’ve been searching all over for the codecs to reinstall to get my Final Cut back to where it was before all of this mess. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to cross-post this over in the Blackmagic forum. I have a BM card that I only use for monitoring (I capture and output through an Aja IO), so I can’t really help with that, but about the OS install…

From what I have heard, you need to do a “clean” install of Tiger, which means completely wiping your hard drive in the process. If this is not what you did then that could be the cause of these problems also.

    Hope this helps!

Before you do that you might try reinstalling Final Cut the system update and your driver packages for your hardware… after you run Disk Utility…
