  • Final Cut gamma shift for Photo-JPEG

    Hi guys,

Here’s the problem I’m facing right now:

I have HDV 24p footage (from Canon HV20). I captured and converted to 24p as per Apple’s official workflow (https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2410). I did conversion in Compression for same clips using two codecs: Apple ProRes and Photo-JPEG.

The first problem: Apple ProRes footage is darker than original. (on the contrary Photo-JPEG is the same as the original footage).

The second problem: When I import the footage to Final Cut Pro, in case of ProRes I get the same darker picture, but when I import Photo-JPEG I also get the picture darker than if I open the same footage in Quicktime.

I have a problem understanding where is this gamma shift is coming from and what can be done about it? (i’m working on one monitor).

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi David,
PhotoJPEG is YUV or RGB depending of the quality you set on exporting. I know that if you export 100% quality, is RGB. I know that if you export 75% is YUV 422. But I don’t know about the in-between values.
This can be producing the gamma Shift.
BTW where are you seeing the Gamma Shift? IN FC, QT Player?

From Compressor I have arou 95-98% quality in Photo-JPEG.

The shift is visible only in FCP and when rendered out of it. Other than that Photo-JPEG footage from Compressor plays with same as native gamma in QT.

But when I export HDV from Compressor with ProRes in both QT and FCP I get shift to the darker side.
