Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro problem
Hey guys I am new here but have a problem that I was wondering if someone could help me out.
I’ve recently run into a problem with upgrading to Final Cut Pro from Final Cut Express and wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions or ways to fix this problem.
This past year I have been working on an important project and just completed it this December. During this time I edited the short film together using Final Cut Express
on my 24 inch iMac. This past week I have upgraded to the new 27 inch i7 iMac and installed Final Cut Studio on there.When I opened the FCE project into FCP everything appeared to be working right but then I noticed that the color was way off. This really bothers me since I put a lot of time
into coloring the project. The main reason I know the color is off is because I also have a Apple 24 inch cinema display that I used with my old 24 inch
iMac when editing the project. It seems that since the main picture is on the 24 inch external monitor that was previously used then I should have the same color and tone from before.As of right now when I have the project opened in Final Cut Pro the color is a lot brighter and washed out. I have checked my filters and made sure everything like color correction was
turned on and they were. My main question is there a setting or something that I can adjust to make my old FCE project work right and give me the right playback in FCP? I guess I could
always go back to my old iMac for older projects but I would like to be able to use Final Cut Pro instead with both new and old projects.Any advice on how to fix this or adjust any setting would really help. Thanks a lot.

Yes. Both iMacs are were and currently running the most updated version of Snow Leopard.

The problem you have here is that you have no “baseline,” i.e. no known starting point that you absolutely know to be a “proper” color display, and so how are you to know which monitor, if any, to trust? The answer is, you can’t trust any of one them, because not one of them is calibrated.
In order to even begin to color correct video, you have to be absolutely certain what color correct looks like, and that correct color actually does display on your monitor, and that means that a known reference, such as color bars, must display properly, which requires at least some rudimentary form of calibration.
The most basic form of calibration to color bars is setting proper luminance (i.e. relative brightness), by insuring that the “pluge bar” on the color bars displays properly. This will at least get you started… But if you’re going to be broadcasting this video you’ve got a lot more to do and to learn than simply about calibrating the basic luminance.

In the current OS FCE will display video output differently from FCP, which is designed to more closely approximate a broadcast display, though it is by no means accurate. Your best workflow is to finish the project in whatever application you started, or to leave color correction to the end of the process and do that in the senior application with its more sophisticated and comprehensive tool set.
