I have a Sony HDR-XR500V and I have had no problems capturing my footage through final cut express.

What is really perplexing me is this question:
Is the log and transfer window only designed for capturing footage directly from the camera? Is there a way to import footage from a hard disk whihc has been converted with AIC?

The functionality of the log and transfer window is really great. I deleted the footage from my camera and now I want to be able to go back and add it too this window from my scratch disk but i can’t work out how to do this.

This begs the question in relation to editing workflow, do you really have to add log details at the time you capture your footage? This doesn’t make sense if you have a project that spans a long period of time. Am i missing something? Is there another way to sort through and log details of footage?

If the footage has already been converted to AIC you simply use the Import function.

You can also enter logging information in the browser after you’ve imported or ingested the media.

    All the best,

    Tom
