  • Final Cut Express 4.0 compatible with FCP 6.0.6?

Posted by Stephen Metzger on December 24, 2010 at 11:03 pm

    Hi,

I’m at a workstation that has Final Cut Express 4.0, and I have Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 at home. I’d like to edit here and then work further at home later on. Will I be able to open FCE 4 project files in FCP 6.0.6? If not, is there any way to open data from an FCE 4 project in FCP 6.0.6?

    Thanks!

You can open the FCE project in FCP, but once it’s saved in FCP you will not be able to open it in FCE.

Yeah, I won’t need to reopen it in FCE, so that’s not a concern, but are you sure these two versions are compatible? I know that FCP 7 is the newest FCP version and FCE 4 is the newest FCE version, so I’m worried that since I have FCP 6 it won’t be new enough to read the FCE 4 file. What do you think?

FCE4 is based on FCP6. Yes, it will open the Express project file.

I started a project on FCP 6 and just had a hard drive crash. Thankfully all my media is on an external drive. I have access to a computer with Final Cut Express 4 and am wondering if I can continue editing–I am in a remote area without transportation or access to stores. My FCP 6 program is not backed up on the external hard drive.

No, you can’t. In most circumstances FCE cannot open an FCP project.
