Final Cut Express 4 stretching a fade in fade out dissolve
I cannot understand how to do this reliably.
In some cases I drag the effect between two clips, mouse over one edge mouse down and drag and the effect stretches.
But I drop it on a different clip and cannot get it to stretch at all.
I have tried Option clicking, control clicking, reading Lisa Brenneis book and nothing in there.
Manual does not explain how to do this.
One time I could not make it go forward and moved the effect to the next clip and was able to drag it backwards.
Position does not seem to be the issue either. Slightly on, deeply on, and even more on,(< those are highly technical terms)
I am sure there is some very simple little things, sitting out in plain sight.

You have to have enough time (handles) on the ends of both clips to stretch a dissolve.

Yes someone was at my house, I described what was happening and he explained that likely I had extra video “hidden” by the in and out points and when I dragged the effect pulled out that hidden footage.
I was confused reading about “Handles” that terminology really does not make itself naturally clear.
