  • Final cut… crash… ka-pow… NEED HELP :(

Posted by Mike Domenick on November 12, 2008 at 4:09 am

I’ve done searches on this forum for this solution, but I can’t find a solution.

I’m working on a project for the Style Network and all of us can’t wrap our heads around this problem. We have several editing bays where editors are working on certain acts (Editor 1 works on act 1, editor 2 works on act 2, ect). The editing bay with editor 1 keeps crashing. When bringing the project over to another editing station, the project still crashes. We have tried every solution but still cannot figure out the problem. We’ve done the simple restoring preferences, trashing render files to the complex of redigitizing all the footage and rebuilding the project from scratch. Still, it crashes. One thing I’ve noticed is that for some reason it says MPEG2CompressorCompanentDispatch despite the fact that all the footage was captured at XDCAM HD422 1080i60 (50 Mb/s) and the sequence is the same preference. Any help?

Here is the crash log. I’ve included only the error and the thread. If any other info is needed, please let me know.

    Mike

XDCAM HD 422 is an MPEG format and its native codec, as supplied by Apple, is part of the AppleHDVCodec.component bundle.

I found that out recently, but it still doesn’t explain why it’s crashing. Sometimes it happens during a render, sometimes it doesn’t. It crashes nearly every time I try to export.

    Mike
Can I reasonably assume that you are working with footage transfered from an F700 ? And that the “capture” is via XDCAM Transfer rewrapping the camera native MXF clips to MOV files for use in FCP? And the Export is also using XDCAM Transfer back to disc as MXF wrapped MPEG HD 422 or exporting as Quicktime Movie with or without transcode to other formats? Can you also confirm that your workflows work flawlessly with projects and content acquired and handled in any other suite other than your Edit 1? Just looking for some more details to try to figure out what’s up.

    Cheers

    Yes

    Yes

    Quicktime

The project, when brought into another editing bay (Edit 2-9), will also crash. We’ve also tried transferring the media and projects to another Raid (Thinking it may be the drives). Final Cut seems to crash when scrolling through the timeline or when rendering. However, other projects (other episodes of this show) seem to work fine in Edit 1.

    Mike,
As a workaround until the cause is nailed down, try changing your sequence codec to ProRes 422 (obviously the source remains the same native XDCAM HD 422) … now, does FCP still crash when scrubbing in the ProRes timeline, and when exporting a self-contained Quicktime Movie (w/Current Settings) from that ProRes 422 sequence, do you still get crashes?

As an aside, if you create the project in Edit 2-9 eg not transfer it from Edit 1 but create it from scratch in Edit 2, do you get the same problem. Basically, can you confirm that the issue is wholly edit suite / fcp installation independent?

One more thing to try, Mike…

Trash your preferences, and try again. If it’s still happening, it maybe be a piece of corrupt media – maybe something that was imported or it could be a render file.

You can clear out the render files using Render Manager and then re-rendering your program.

But from what I gather from the posts, it sounds like a piece of corrupt media that was imported using Sony Software Transfer plugin. Its happened to me before.

When ever I send a project from Final Cut to compressor.
    Final cut becomes unresponsive.
Is this a ram problem? I am using a 2.33GHZ MacBook Pro with 2 gigs of Ram.
