  • Final Cut clip went offline and vanished, can’t recapture

Posted by Catherine404 on February 15, 2006 at 1:07 am

hello. i have been editing a project on final cut pro 4 hd with a powerbook g4, capture scratch on a lacie…just in case any of that matters.
my footage is broken up into a rough cut of 12 sequences. randomly today, one of my clips went offline. i tried to reconnect to media and the clip is gone. i looked in my fc files, my external drive, all my quicktime files…etc. and its just gone. so i cant reconnect it. i tried to re-log and capture and while doing that, it went to another clip on the same tape and that one went offline as well, now completely vanished too.
also, my camera (dvx100a) is connected to re-log and capture, but when i reopen final cut, it wont acknowledge its presence. i have turned it on and off and closed and re-opened the project several times. it just wont acknowledge its there. however, if i hit “continue,” go into final cut and hit “log and capture,” the window will come up and it says “preview disabled,” but, if i hit the play button, the video on my camera will play. so i know it knows its there, but i cant see the video and cant log and capture.
i had previously been logging sound clips, but changed the settings back to audio and video.
i dont know what to do. i need those clips back and im worried if i try to capture them again, a third clip will go offline.
i just got my camera back from being serviced, is there a chance it is my camera?
    please help.
    thanks so much.

Try and start up iMovie. This is just a test to see where the problem is. If iMovie can capture and preveiw, the firewire cable and camera, all physical parts are good.

Go back to FCP. Can you output to the camera what is on your timeline?

Go into FCP pulldown>Audio video settings. Under the summery tab, go to the bottom and look at video playback. See if you can get it to play out.

You can also use an easy setup to get you back on track.

    Hope this helps-

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
    or
    https://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.

Not necessarily. iMovie only requires VANDA and deck control. It doesn’t take any TC information. You can find a set-up will work with iMovie and not with Final Cut because it has different device control requirements. A faulty cable can work in iMovie, but because of a bad pin connection will not work in Final Cut.

    All the best,

    Tom
