Final Cut 7 on one drive, X on another
Hello all.
I’m trying to transition from FCP7 to X. I have two hard drives on my 2010 MBP. I thought it would be a good idea to keep my startup drive as is (with FCP 7 running Mavericks) and update the other drive to El Capitan. All is well, but trying to install FCP X on the new drive, I get the error that I already have a version of FCP installed and it’s not compatible with El Cap. I guess it’s finding the FCP7 on the other drive. Any way to get around this? I tried unmounting the other drive but it didn’t help.

That’s odd. I have a 2010 Mac Pro with Yosemite and FCP X on my boot drive and Snow Leopard and FCP 5 on a second drive that I occasionally boot with to use DVD Studio Pro (although it works fairly well on Yosemite too). I haven’t had any problem with FCP X not installing because of FCP being on the second drive.
You do have your system set up the opposite of mine. I wonder if you go into System Preferences and make El Capitan your boot drive and reboot, if it will ignore the Mavericks drive because it’s no longer marked as the boot drive and then install FCP X? It’s worth a try.

It depends on your definition of “run”. 😉 It will not “install” on OS X 10.9 Mavericks because the installer is written for PowerPC Macs and Rosetta (the component that allows PowerPC Mac applications to run on Intel Mac’s) is not included with OS X Mavericks. In fact, it disappeared with 10.7 Lion so FCP 7 will not install on Lion and above.
If you already have it installed and upgrade to 10.9.5 it should “mostly” continue to run but some things may no longer work. This is why it is recommended that if you need to run unsupported software that you have an extra drive with the version of OS X that the software requires. As you get further away from OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, you will find FCP 7 functionality to be less and less compatible.
