Final Cut 7 Capturing Problems.
I have FCP 7 and am having lots of issues with capturing tapes.
I am using a Sony HDR-HC9 High-Definition MiniDV Handycam Camcorder as my deck. I am trying to capture HD footage on a 2.66GHz i5.
Capture Mode: Log and Capture
Tapes: HDV 1080i
Capturing to: G-RAID
Capture Settings: Apple Pro Res 422 HQHere’s my plight:
1. Sunday & Tuesday.
At the same time code points on my TAPE 2, Final Cut just closed and gave me an “Unexpected Error Occurred” message. All my stuff not saved before the capture was gone. At first, I assumed it must have been a time code hit or something strange with TAPE 2 – right? However, the “Unexpected Error” kept occurring again at other points randomly on this TAPE 2. I ended up having to capture (1) clip at a time.Maybe it could be my camera? I don’t know. It happened on TAPE 3 as well. But, it seemed to pass.
2. Wed.
Last night, Final Cut suddenly started to telling me (4) of my clips were “not connected to the media” for TAPE 5. Almost as if someone yanked out my firewire cable.However, I think this would be impossible since all my drives were connected?
But, when I went to locate or search the clip in the “reconnect media settings” – FCP crashed and gave me the “Unexpected Error”.
I captured again. And then started noticing that these (4) captured clips from TAPE 5 had suddenly became corrupted. When I played the clip, I get random green flashes and flashing images/and screeching audio – like something out of EASY RIDER.
I just got this computer and final cut last week. Everything should be good to go – and I’m hoping these buggy issues will pass.
Also, I dubbed all backups of these tapes at a dubhouse I work at – and didn’t notice any issues with the tapes so I’m hoping it’s FCP and not my tapes.
However, I’m editing a feature – and I’m a bit timid about what’s been happening so far.

You can’t capture HDV as PRoREs HQ without a capture card. You can capture it to ProRes, but you have to follow the workflow to do that:

ProRes HQ is overkill for HDV. It is meant for 10-bit formats, and HDV is an 8-bit format, so ProRes 422 will be fine. The only thing gained would be larger file sizes.

So I assume the issues I have been encountering are because I’m capturing Apple Pro Res HQ?
Also, I assume I should start from scratch and recapture everything as Apple Pro Res?
