Final Cut 6 will not import iMovie files
Hello,
I have been working with Final Cut Pro 4 for a few years and just recently got a hold of version 6 through Final Cut Studio 2.I have always imported my video clips through iMovie and transferred them over to Final Cut because I don’t like the way Final Cut imports clips. I go to FILE: IMPORT: Files… and then select my iMovie project.
PROBLEM: for some reason, this version will not import any iMovie files. It seems to be importing everything else (quicktime files, mp3,) but nothing from iMovie. I tried going through all the different preferences but no luck. Is there a reason for this or is it a bug in the program? Any help would be appreciated.

It depends entirely on the content of the iMovie project file. You re talking about iMovie 06, aren’t you? Or do you mean iMovie 08? Some effects or music in the iMovie project may prevent it from being imported. You may have to export the iMovie content or drag it media out of the iMovie package, again assuming you;re talking about 06.

You may not like the way FCP captures, but you really should learn to use it. It will save you a lot of time. I suggest you break all chains and habits you have associates with iMovie unless you are going to stay inside the application.

I believe you have to export a XML file from iMovie for FCP 6 to import it.
What issues do you have with how FCP imports footage?
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

This is a really bad workflow. iMovie does not support all the same codecs and quality as FCP. You’re always better off starting and finishing in FCP.
I honestly have no ideas why it would not import unless it’s a codec / format / quality FCP doesn’t like. But then I’ve never tried your workflow.
