  • Filtering back ground crying to clarify a deep voice

Posted by Joseph Dezordi on January 9, 2008 at 8:59 am

I have made some videos of bed side medical teaching tutorials, quite often the babies cry whilst the professor is teaching.

I have tried some technqiques in Vegas which I dont really understand to try to subtract the high frequency of the baby cry in order to clarify the deeper male professors voice

I have tried variations on Fletcher Munson curves & have found that this can reduce back ground hiss but not really effectively reduce the babies high pitched piercing overpowering cry without totally destroying the voice of the speaker.

I have also looked at the parametric equaliser but it does not appear to be selective enough…although I dont really understand how to use it,
Does any one know of any method or technology that can deal with this? is there some magic ‘ high pitched cry remover’ plugin for Vegas or another programe?

Isnt there some programme which creates a topographic map of a voice on a grid & allows you to selectively modify it ?

I note that once I render these into AVIs that the baby’s cry becomes even more over powering & blended with the speaker’s voice…

Any suggestions in the future in the recording phase that might reduce the problem ?

    Thanks

Take a look at iZotope RX.
The new tutorial videos at the top of this page give you a good ideas as to it’s capabilities.
It is $350 but you get what you pay for – and, in this case, you get an excellent audio tool 🙂
