  • Filter for Removing ‘VHS Generation noise’

    Hi all,

Is there a filter I could use to clean a sequence made of VHS extracts ? There is no big b&w noise, but the image is somewhat noisy and grainy (think 2nd gen). I know I can’t expect to get it perfectly clean, but I’d like to clean a bit of this noise. What filter or combination of filters should I tweak with in order to improve my clips quality ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Marco

I’m lucky enough, the VHS are all cuts from broadcasters output for a corporate client. So all the original material was professionally shot, nicely lit, etc. However, I’m still stuck with VHS from which I need to edit and cut a DVD. Not ideal, but that’s what I have.

Anyone please let me know if you know a good way of dealing/improving my image quality before compressing my final cut.

    Thanks in advance,

    Marco

You can use the noise reduction filter in Compressor while you encode.

Actually… Color Correcting VHS footage will help. The color seperation of R G B gets farther apart from each other as VHS is dubbed. Removing color and adding contrast can make it look better.

In channels there is a chroma offset / channel offset that I believe can let you adjust the R G B a bit for a clearer merge of the 3 channels.

The noise is kinda’ always going to be there though.

Sometimes blurring the image slightly then sharpening helps to remove noise with acceptable results.
