Files used for a project on after effect (Footage file storage location)
Hello everyone,
I am the president of a non-profit association based in Belgium and we create short and feature films for the deaf community. I have extensive knowledge for after effects for 10 years but I would like to have an expert opinion concerning the storage of the files used in the composition.
After Effects i on my main hard drive wich is :
Crucial SSD M.2 2TB
Sequencial Read : 3500 Mb/s
Sequential Write 3000 Mbs/s.
The cache is on a SSD drive that is only for AE cache with 500 gb.
Sequential Read/Write is 560 mb/s
And the footage files are stored in a external ssd drive on usb 3.2
So my question is :
Should I put the files and the cache on my primary hard drive (the M.2 wich has a read speed of 3500 mb/s)
Or I can still leave the cache on my ssd at 560 mb/s ?
Regardring the files used, would it be better if they were on the M.2 to have a faster reading speed for to composition ?

Speed is most important for the cache; I’d definitely move that to your M.2 drive. Speed for footage is less important unless your comps are really heavy on I/O.

Thanks for your reply.
I will make a folder on my master drive M.2 for the cache.
But when I import files (large video) from another HD does it not slow up the whole process ? (preview and render) ?
If my cache and files that I use on my composition are on (C:) Will this have performance benefit ?
