File sizes much to large
I’m very very new to Final Cut Pro but I’m begining to get a feel for video editing and its really a lot of fun. The only problem is, my file sizes are much to large when exported. Mine are 800+ MB when other films with some of the same content, size, and time are only around 140 MB. I am exporting my video in 680 x 480 size and all the clips in my video are 680×480. I was curious if someone could show me the best settings to minimize file size. Thanks!

What codec are you using? 800MB is a pretty small file for video.

I am using the H.264 codec, and the AAC codec for audio. While the 800 MB size may seem small, it really is quite large compared to a video with the same specs that is only 170 MB. Size is an issue here because I’m trying to upload this video to a file hosting website where other people can download my work. However, I don’t want them donwloading 800 MB of video when they could be downloading much less. Any ideas here?

H264 id not an editing codec, therefor FCP cannot edit H264 natively.
What are your time line settings?
Edit in a proper editing format then export a H264 file.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

For more control and an estimate of your file size before you render, try exporting a Quicktime movie [with ‘Current Settings’] from FCP, then send that to Compressor and pick a preset. Under the ‘Web Download’ folders, there are a few possible ones for your use [to upload online].
One extra tip: in order to check what size and quality you’d like, instead of finding out only after you’ve rendered the whole movie [sounds like a long one], you can set in and out points in compressor, export to a few different settings, compare the encoded portions then pick one for the final conversion.
