I’ve just done a job for someone in the States and I’m in the UK, I now want to send them the footage, shot on P2 (13 Gb in total).

I was wondering does anyone out there any suggestions as to the best way to send them to him over the internet, are there any good ftp sites that you guys use? Or is there any file sharing software I should be using?

Obviously I want to save as much money as possible as I’m only a one man band.

    Many thanks

I use my .Mac account for this. Standard storage there is large enough for this job. If you google “FTP” sites, you’ll find other services that would do the same. But having an iPhone, and 3 computers, the .mac experience is wonderful and worth the price of admission IMHO.

I’m quite a luddite when it comes to updates and also quite paranoid, so I keep my Mac off the net, but out of interest is your .Mac account something you pay extra for or is that a built in Mac thing for Mac customers?

Also you advised to google ftp sites, is there a particular one that you’ve used or heard of that’s good?

    Many thanks

Yeah, a .Mac account (Now it’s actually called “mobile me”) is $99/yr… https://www.apple.com/mobileme/

It does more than give you cloud storage too. Pushes contacts to all computers/iphones/iPads etc… all are updated when you change one, they all sync with the data on the mobile me account. It’s very cool and I’ve more than gotten my money’s worth with it.

Hi. You could try Pando. The free version has a 1Gb limit and the Pro version (circa £20 a year) has a 3Gb limit so you would have to divide up your stuff. Its a “personal P2P”. Pretty good IMHO, if not for this job then in the future maybe.
    Matt.

Mm, food for thought guys, thanks; it looks like the Apple solution may be the best one if it’s unlimited file size, I use yousendit for files up to 2gb, but this one’s a biggy.

    There’s a “family” plan for 149/yr that includes 40GB.. it’s 20GB standard.

If you use Sorenson software, 360 is the cat’s meow… https://www.sorensonmedia.com This service is redundant and is first cabin. comes free for a year with Squeeze.. which I think makes very pretty compressions. Not quite what you’re looking for, but sort of fits here.

I don’t understand why people fool with services like you send it, Me.com for exchanging files between yourself and clients.

A true ftp server is so much faster to upload and download. I paid about $160 for my hosting service and it has unlimited storage.

That’s a very good point Michael, I’ll check those guys out; I guess because I’m still a novice and a poor one at that, that I’m always looking the cheap/free solution, but I guess or rather I know that sometimes it just can’t be avoided and I have to stump up the cash.

    Thanks for the info.
