    Howdy!

Brand-spanking new to FCP here – just bit the bullet and said bye-bye to my beloved Media 100 system (well, not truly bye-bye, its still here, but you get the point…)

New client, new workflow scenario – hoping one of you vets can help me plan properly:

    1. Footage will be acquired from client as QT files. Some will be 640×480 square, some 800×600 square, etc. All will be frames, no fields.

    2. I will need to edit in FCP.

    3. Will need to be output from FCP as files again. Some of these will be compressed to H.264, some wll be made into DVD’s, and there may even be other scenarios. I need to be ready for many situations.

    Now, my questions:

    1. Assume best way to adjust size of these files files to import into FCP is in After Effects? To make everything 640×480?

    2. What codec should I render to in After Effects to import into FCP

import them into FCP and adjust them there is needed. no need to go into after effects for this. However, if these files are mpeg compressed,, or of an edit-unfrendly codec, I would convert to the codec you are going to edit with before importing into FCP. You can do this in Quicktime, Compressor, After Effects, Mpeg Streamclip… so on…
