Field Flicker JVC GY 700 FCP 7
Hi All,
I’m in the final stages of editing a multi-part program and can’t shake a persistent field flicker problem. I’ve submitted edits to the network and they keep seeing ‘flickers’. Apologies for the length of this post. Basically I want to make the flicker stop. Here are the details.
Most of the flicker is seen with footage shot by JVC GY 700. Project is PAL. 90% of footage shot in PAL. The rest was converted using Mpeg Sreamclip. They’ve seen flickering with both PAL and converted footage.
Footage from JVC GY 700: Apple XDXCAM EX 1080i50/25fps. The camera produces .mov files which I can import directly to my FCP 7 project. No Log and Transfer necessary. https://www.pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL101851
My Sequence Settings: 1920 x 1080, HDTV 1080i50, Square, Upper, Compressor XDCAM EX 1080i50.
So, sequence matches the footage settings.Exports: This is how I’ve exported the episodes/sequences the network has reviewed: Export/Quicktime movie/ Current Settings (audio and video) + make movie self contained. This gives me an .mov file with these attributes: Apple XDAM EX 1920 x 1080i50 (35 mbs/VBR), 25 Fps
I then make H.264 .movs from the Apple XDCAM EX file from FCP7 using Media Streamclip. 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Here’s a sample “flicker” from a frame taken from original camera clip.

Here what a sample “flicker” from a frame looks like in my FCP record/canvas window

I did a test in case this was a field order problem.
1) Export the sequence as Quicktime movie using its source settings: XDCAM EX 1080i50.
2) Export the XDCAM EX 1080i50 Quicktime movie as an Apple ProRes 1920 x1080 50 422 movie. De-interlace the video.
3) Export the ProRes 422 De-interlaced movie as 50 fps, H.264 Quicktime movie. Interlace video. Upper field dominance. The client still noticed Flickers in the Test export I did. Any thoughts advice, direction greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
David
