Field dominance issues
I’ve been having trouble getting a sequence from DVCPROHD 720 out to NTSC DVD, the image on DVD sometimes looks jagged or broken up with a general terrible quality to it. It looks worse during certain bright scenes.
I had thought the image was breaking apart during the compression as the image looks fine in HD. Also seems fine downcoverted to NTSC 8-bit uncompressed, but when I compress it to mpeg it looks terrible on a monitor.
Looking a little deeper and I realize the HD clips are set to upper field dominance. I don’t know how, but it must have occurred during capture(?) and I just now discovered this now that the film is finished.
When I drop the HD sequence into the 8bit uncompressed sequence, FCP automatically applies a “shift fields” +1 filter.(?) The image appears to look fine at this stage until I compress out to mpeg, then it crumbles.
What do I want to do at this point to get this into mpeg? Should I remove the shift fields filter since DVD is upper field anyways? Change the NTSC sequence to upper field dominance? De-interlace? Was the footage captured incorrect and how would I undo the problem going from DVCPRO720 to NTSC DVD?
thanks, td
