  • Field-based rendering in FCP?

This is probably a very dim question but I could not find anything like it while searching so here goes:

I’ve never been fond of how dissolves & fades look in FCP. Mainly, its the way FCP renders them in frames rather than fields- so the transitions seem stair-stepped in time. I’ve checked my video settings and lower dominance is set and the D1 video looks fine and most transitions seem smooth. So, is just that some transitions just can’t do fields?

Fades to black, dissolves, and even ramping a slug’s opacity in & out for a cheap downstream black- all of it has this strange look that bothers no one here but me.

You’re probably set to a lower resolution in your Sequence. Set your Playback and RT settings to Full Quality.

Already did that. The sequence is set to full res/uncompressed 10 bit.

I did notice something interesting, though. If I did the same setup with another transition it rendered in fields no problem. I think it’s an issue with the transitions themselves. If you use the default cross-dissolve it will render in frames to save time. I’m fairly sure that’s why “fade in/out” dissolve exists- because it renders in fields. I now have a work-around but I’m still not sure why.
