Fianl Cut Problem with new INTEL MAC
WE just purchased a new Final Cut System running the Intel Mac. We have the ciprico huge fibre channel array, we have the kona 3 card and the newest mac with intel processor.
We have loaded DVCPRO HD footage native. We are finding that we are getting the orange render bar when adding a simple transition between two clips. It would seem that we should be able to process much more without requiring a render. As a test, we moved the same raw files and sequence to our other older G5….old processors and running the footage on the internal drives and we can perform the same functions without being required to render.
Further as another test, we moved the footage to the internal drives of our new G5 (intel) and abandoned running the files on the raid. Again we were required to render the files after adding only a small dissolve.
It would appear the HUGE system is fine. Data transfer rates are good when tested. It appears that the intel machine just processes slower. The only thing we have not done yet is remove the kona card to see if it is sucking up system resources for some reason (wasn’t it supposed to help the speed?)
any thoughts or experience would be helpful

Do you have your rt set to unlimited/dynamic? if so, try changing it back to full.

We are running at full. Even on dynamic…the old Quad still doesn’t require a render. but the new on does. Even our systems integrator company can’t understand the lack of processing power.
Anothe issue. We originally had 4gb of Ram in the machine, but it froze….the entire mac, froze when touching a clip in the sequence. We talk to AJA and they said there is a known problem and that running 4 GB of ram will cause problems. We removed the ram and it at least allowed us to manipulate clips.

hmm. You are running the very latest version of fcp, v5.1.2. Correct? The universal binary?

also, you have set the proper slot for the Kona card, Used the correct easy setup and the video you are working with is the correct format?
it sounds as if there is direct conflict with the video format and the setting in FCP

Playback is high and frame rate is full”Well, it seems that you footage and sequence are at different settings. That would cause a problem. Set your sequence to match you footage and everything will play out fine. I have the same equipment (except that we are running a TerraBlock insted of the Ciprico) and I have no problems with DVCPro HD and the Kona3. Have made sure that you are using the 720p59.94 as your primary on the Kona Control Panel?

We were told the 720p 60 frame seeting in FCP is the correct setting for 720p 59.97 by both Apple and AJA as well as our dealer so I don’t think there is a sequence mismatch.
If I am wrong…..clue me in please.

are you running 1gm dimms or 2gb. I just spoke with Intel and apparently there is a known bug running 2gb ram chips when running final cut

you are using a Kona 3 setup, please choose the “Kona 3 720p 59.94 DVCPROHD” easy set up.
Secondly please check to make sure that your scratch disk is actually set to the External array and not just to your Documents folder.
99.99% of drop frame issues on playback are from drives that are not fast enough to match the data rate needed.gary adcock

Acutally upon further review, we are running the sequence at Kona 3 720p 59.94 DVCPROHD with the easy set-up. A little miscommunication between me and the editor.
Still no resolution. we are looking into the ram issues
on your system are you running 2gb chips?

NO
running the Atto fibre card you are currently limited to 2 total gigs of RAM on your intel machine and the ram needs to be mounted in pairs on each sled.
did you check the scratch disk settings? I did not see an answer that you have.
