feedback on mic quality, please
dear creative cow community,
i’m moving into primarily audio documentary from the film documentary world, and am wanting to really hone in on good technique. i’m working on some longer term projects, but am doing a short story series to serve as an inspiring substrate for learning as i go. i’ve pretty much only used shotgun mics in the past, but am debating the value of getting two condensers for studio interview recordings–like the shure ksm-32s.
this story below was recorded with a rode ntg-3. it sounds crisp, but as i listen to some great podcasts and radio pieces more carefully, i’m thinking that the shotgun sound may be a bit too sharp for in-studio storytelling. what do you think? i totally may have tunnel vision (hearing) at this point. anything i could do to soften up the sound? am i nuts? worth it to invest in the condensers? we want our content to be broadcast quality.

BTW, using music that you don’t own in your productions is asking for lawsuits.
