  • feathering -masks – banding problem.

I always get banding artifacts in AE when I use Masks to make vignettes. Its like making a gradient and then getting banding across the gradient if you don’t ad some noise to break it up.
    Can anyone help?
    Banding is killing me, slowly.

Are you using lights or in 3D? I was just about to post a question about the same problem, except that I’m getting it as my light feathers out. Are lights not really 16bit?

(of course, make sure you’re in 16 bit mode, 8 bit will definitely cause banding. FILE-PROJECT SETTINGS)

No 3d lights but I know it causes the same problem. I tried ’16 bit’ but as usual it only helps a ‘bit’. Were doing something wrong, or there’s something we don’t know. Dammit!
The only thing I can think of is to apply your own ‘noise’ to the layer to break up the banding. But surely that is an expensive, bloody time-consuming work-around.

I am having the same problem. My background is green. I have an adjustement layer. I draw an oval mask. I ad a filter “Levels” to it. I reversed the mask. So what’s outside the oval is gradually getting darker. I set 150 of feather. But even if I am in 16bits, it looks like some bands are been rendered. Not acceptable. I am using After Effects 6.5.1 on latest Mac OS X.
