I need to work on some old projects that used FE particles – now known as CC particles causing a “plug missing” problem even though they are same software.

I tried to open the .aep in a text editior and change the effect name but no good.

How can I open these effects heavy projects properly?

Contact cycore? drop by their site. I think they had a workaround for several forward-looking compatibility issues. Sorry I don’t have a quick answer. My legacy FE projects were simple enough to just rebuild; didn’t take too long.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

In some cases it is possible to rename the effects by opening the project file as you described but not always since CC effects have been updated with new options, controls and modified control ranges.
The failsafe and tedious way is as David suggested, bring up the missing effect controls and replicate them.
Another way, still tedious but depending on how your animation is built could save some time. Copy the missing effects values and keyframes from the timeline, paste them in a text editor, replace the effect name with corresponding CC name, copy it and paste back in AE. It is similar to what you tried but the project file is a “binary” file and not as safe to edit as text files.
    Sorry about the trouble!

nice one 🙂 I was just on Cycore site looking for further tips and I hadn’t notced that CS3 was trying to help with missing plugs – great new feature.

btw do you hear any insider news re image lounge? – its stopped us from being able to use intel macs (legacy work again).

    cheers

Not even sure who’s holding the code to Image Lounge these days.
Sad to see such a great package fade away. Hopefully someone will pick up development and update it soon.
Although I still keep an old dual G5 for legacy work and testing, we have begun thinking about when to drop PowerPC support!

Red Giant reckon they are in contact with “engineers”
Only a guess but I personally reckon it will be bundled into adobe – like yourselves.

Even when it was completely in limbo and was not even a currently shipping product held by anybody, Adobe didn’t scarf it up and add it to AE. Now that Red Giant holds it in quasi-limbo, I doubt that its future will change little — if at all. Like Jens, I find that sad as Stoney Ballard wrote some great plug-ins with Image Lounge. At one time ImLo were some of my favorite plug-ins. I lost touch with them years ago.

I wish Adobe would buy Image Lounge but I am not holding my breath waiting for it to happen and surely wouldn’t bet on it.

I agree with Ron, I also unfortunately find it unlikely that Adobe would pick them up now, unless Red Giant has a dedicated developer hooked up with the code ready to update them first.
I really liked Stoneys implementations and seeing as they have been around so long, Adobe would probably make a great home for them.
Updated to universal binary and float would surely make Adobe more interested but it would also make them a lot more expensive to bundle…

if you need to get those older powerpc native effects to work on your macpro, run cs3 under rosetta. to do this, select the ae application, choose file>get info, then check the box that says something like ‘open under rosetta’.

if the powerpc effects are installed in the cs3 plugins folder, you’ll be able to access them in ae running under rosetta. i can’t guarantee they’ll all work really well, but i’ve been doing this for several older projects specifically to get use of image lounge effects and i haven’t had many issues…

hopefully red giant (or someone) will update these effects.

Just being nosey: would you care to take a wild guess at what the programming costs might be?
My naieve estimate is <$400K over six months.

That is probably high, Mark. But even if it were half to a third of that or less, Image Lounge never sold very well — which was sad as they were a great set — so recovering the investment would be highly unlikely.

    Best regards,
