So I want to run FCX and FCP side by side. I’ve read all the best practices documents. I plan to install FCX on a separate internal hard drive that I currently use just to store all my projects.

First question… if I install FCX on this drive do I still have to install MAC OS X on that drive? (I assume yes).

Second question… the I have to install the OS on that drive, HOW do I boot to that drive at startup?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You cannot run both applications on the same computer simultaneously.

According to Apple they can be installed on the same computer but on either a partition or a separate hard drive that has the OS installed on it. Then you must boot to that partition at startup.

I’ve never booted to a different drive or partition before on a Mac so I’m wondering what that process is.

… meaning one FCP on one drive and FCX on the other.

It doesn’t matter what drives the applications are on. You can only run one OS at a time. Both applications will not run in the same OS simultaneously.

Yes. Understood. But what I’m asking is how do you boot to the desired drive or partition?

When you restart hold the Option key and you’ll get a window that allows you to select the boot drive. If you’re not going to run the applications simultaneously there is no need for separate partitions. You can simply close one application and open the other.

    Thanks Tom.

I can install on the SAME drive, just can’t run them at the same time… so what you’re saying is that there is no need to partition as long as you close each down before opening the other.

    That’s what I’ll do. Thanks!

That’s correct. All our machines have both 7 and X. All the studio applications are in a folder called Final Cut Studio in the Applications folder. FCPX is at the top level of the Applications folder.

As I understand it though, to install them both on the same system, it is necessary to first install FCP7 and then install FCPX. I have FCPX running on my internal drive and hate to have to remove it so I can reinstall FCP7, but that seems to be the only way.

Rename FCP something like FCP. Install the studio suite. Gather all the studio apps into a Final Cur Studio folder. Rename FCP if you like.
