  • FCS 2-Final Cut Pro 6 – crash everytime I go to Finder

I upgraded my FCP to the new FCS2 and was really happy working on my reel for a few days, without any sort of freeze…but it was a simple project with only one sequence and around 20 clips inside.

but now, I upgraded another project, which is reaaaally big, with more then
200 tapes digitized, several sequences, and probably more than 3500 clips logged/captured…

I’ve already saved that old proj as a new FCS2 projet and digitized some more tapes with no problems…but the strange thing is that everytime I get out of FCP (without closing the proj) to the finder or to another app, when I click back on FCP, the ball just start spinnig forever and FCP freezes ( do not respond ) …only force quit would take me out of the freeze.
during this final cut freeze, the rest of the system apperently still working, I can still open or move files in the finder.
If I do not attempt to change applications or browse the finder, FCP works fine.

I tried to create separate projects with parts of the big one, opening a brand new project together with my old and copying only the tape bins to it and it also freezed…in the same way as my old.

I would love to fix this on my Mac Pro before upgrading my other computer ( which is a Power Mac G5

We had a similar problem on a G5 2gb single duo core. I just bought a new drive and reloaded everything because we didn’t have time to figure it out. I’m guessing it’s something in the OS. I still have the other drive and am going to try and figure it out after switching this machine for a new 8 core intel in a couple of weeks.

    thanks Jim

    Do you mean
you replaced the internal sys drive, re-install os X10.4.9, and Final Cut..and everything worked fine?
and when you had that problem you were working on FCP 5.4.1..
just wanna make sure I got it right..

I don’t have the time to test too much….just like you…
because the machine is being used 10 hour/day..with that big project, digitizing the last tapes…and it’s working….
as long as I don’t move away from FC6…otherwise..freeze..fast clock..and spinnig rainbow ball in that order and forever….

I wich I can solve this bug tomorrow…(so I can upgrade the other station to FC6, knowing that it will run my project) as we move next week to the cuts and I was willing to run both machines at the same time each working on different parts and copies of the big project..
…but if I don’t..I’ll probaly going to re-install everything at night..
and start from the very beginning.

    thanks again for your support
and if anyone heard about a solution for this crash..please share..

Same exact problem on the G5 as you describe OS 10.4.8 and FCP 5.1.2. I did a clean OS install on a new drive and copied everything else over as part of the install dialog. As part of the trouble shooting we updated both to 10.4.9 and 5.1.4. It went back to a more normal crash pattern afterwards, which is why to me it looks like something in the OS is at fault. I’m getting new MAC Pros along with FCS 2 in a couple of weeks and I might have time to check this out but more realistically I’ll just wipe the old drive and move on as I’ll need to use the drive as a dual boot for media100 on one of the new systems.
