  • FCPX – title doesn’t travel with clip during graphic transition

Posted by Tim Wilde on May 21, 2012 at 1:44 pm

I’m trying out FCPX and am having trouble doing something I should think would be real simple. I’d appreciate help.

I have a clip with a title over the last 3 seconds. I want to use a Coverflow-like graphic transition called “Swap” (in Movements). The outgoing clip recedes stage left and then the incoming clip flies in from stage right. The problem I’m observing is that the title over the outgoing clip stays full-screen and doesn’t travel with its associated clip. ??!!

It won’t. Trying combining the clip and the title into a compound clip. This nests the two together.

Thank you very much, Oliver, for replying.

I selected both the clip and its title, and made them a Compound Clip. The Swap effect pulls the outgoing clip with title into the background. BUT… it doesn’t pull ALL of the original clip’s frame, just the lower right corner of it with the entire title. I saw this before during another test and just blew it off but clearly there’s a pattern here when applying a graphic effect to compound clip.

I’ll have too switch to the Mac to post a screen shot of what’s happening. So give me a couple minutes to post that.

See attached pix. Note that I hastily put a white circle over the person in the shot for privacy. The circle is being treated like the title in that it’s fully displayed during the transition. But only the lower quarter of the actual clip of a H&S shot of a person is shown in the transition. Truly weird.

BTW, if I don’t compound the clips and just apply the Swap effect to the clip of the person the entire frame of the person flies upstage as you’d expect it to. So I’d say this happens only when applying a graphic transition to a compound clip.
