  • FCPX Share menu greyed out

Please help me! The options of the share menu are greyed out on *some* projects but not others. I edited a 33 minute long wedding and it won’t let me export the final timeline. The menu is all greyed out. On some individual timelines I am able to get to this menu but not all. I’m not sure why as they are all the same setting!

I looked it up elsewhere and it all says the same thing, make sure you are up to date on your software (check!) and that you have a fast enough computer (check! its new!) and to reinstall FCPX. I’ve reinstalled twice now.

    Help!

I just realized this is only happening on the projects with multicam clips.

    Sandra,

One reality of X is that it’s built to let you work faster than the machine calculates the underlying data. To do this it uses thumbnail data for display purposes while the program imports/transcodes/calculates and generally “does the math” for finished results.

At some point, you have to let it do it’s underlying calculations.

One trick is if it doesn’t do what you want at times – open the render manager (click on the green circle in the HUD) and check out if X is still doing a lot of stuff in the background. If so, patience is your friend.

Nothing is going on in the background tasks.

I had this happen to me and it was driving me crazy, as it was on one project and no others. I came across this link and it helped me out.

    https://revuptransmedia.com/index.php/component/content/article/40-tutorials/170-reimport

Basically, if there is ONE clip that is referencing the camera original and has not been imported, then you cannot export your project. You can tell because your project will have a hazard warning on it, and also the event will also have a hazard warning. Then the clips or clips that are referencing camera originals have the camera icon next to them and have to be reimported.

In my case these two files never imported fully, as the system was shut off before the import finished and I didn’t realize as I could edit everything without issue, but couldn’t export, until re-importing and then everything was fine.

Hopefully you still have the camera original files.
    David

Thanks for this. I was able to determine the bad files by when I went to “reveal in finder” and it wasn’t clickable. It took several hours to replace clips but way better than starting all over. Thanks everyone!

Awesome idea Sandra – it worked for me – a MILLION thanks. The share menu was available for other projects/timelines but not for the big honking doc I spent a year working on and needed to output today.

Not sure I can express in words the extent of the pit in my stomach facing this grayed out menu for the first time (have been test exporting all along, backing up, no issues). Waited for the background/task rendering but that didn’t provide relief and I’m not a big believer in the pref trash/reinstall software options when things like this come up so I mined the forums for suggestions and yours made sense to me/my situation.

Some of the last-minute B-roll I added from older events were the offenders. I clicked through and found about 8 clips that wouldn’t reveal in the finder, re-imported them, and voila – the menu appeared!! Seriously, thank you so much for posting your question and resolution here – it really saved my project today!
