  • FCPX not recognizing old external drive when new one is attached

Hello! I’m editing a film and have all of the media for it on a WD My Book Studio. There is also a Seagate Drive chained to that which is recognized by FCPX.

I wanted to add another WD My Book Studio to the chain and use that to store the final product. But when I add it, FCPX recognizes the new drive but no longer recognizes the one with the media files on it.

To be more specific, when the program starts up the original drive appears in the Event Library but then disappears.

I’ve seen that others have had problems similar to this, but I don’t understand why it recognizes the original drive when there are 2 HDs in the chain but not when I add a third.

    Some (possibly) relevant info:
I have never used any of them for Time Machine, and Time Machine is turned off.
They are all formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
It diesn’t matter in what order the HDs are linked.
The files are in the root of the first drive and have not been moved or changed.
    They are connected by Firewire.
The third drive, which I am attempting to add, doesn’t have anything on it yet.

    Any thoughts?

Just a thought, does each drive have a unique name?

Yes, all three have unique names.
I suppose what I could do is hook all three drives together and shift anything that’s not part of this project to the third drive and then remove it (in order to clear some space on the drives FCPX will recognize).

That doesn’t explain or really solve this problem, but it would allow me to continue working on my project.
