The problem is I think his key metric is completely flawed. Adoption of new applications (and I think at this point, regardless of the name, we can all agree that FCPX is in essence a new application) comes to larger post facilities LAST.

Disruption almost never comes from the top- Legacy FCP, and more recently Premier Pro, toiled for years in the backwoods before getting a foothold in bigger shops.

Toronto is my home turf as well, and he’s not wrong about FCPX adoption. But I think starting with “Are big shops adopting it?” and reverse-engineering that the software is not professional is ass-backwards in my book.

[Andy Branner] “Not sure what “logic” that’s banking on, but I can’t follow it.”

Only that’s what he said at IBC. And I don’t believe it to be a “technical” link per se (other than optimization)- but more a PR link. New MacPro, new FCPX. it’s good synergy. But one doesn’t “depend” on the other in the strictest terms…

[Andy Branner] “color? You mean in terms of shot comparison and the likes?”

I actually very much like the FCPX colour correction setup- it is very “Resolve’esque” in it’s Primary and Secondaries implementation. Some additional tools like curves, levels, and (why not) colour wheels would make it a pretty powerful NLE CC. And I wouldn’t mind an even single-point mask tracker either….

[Andy Branner] “You realize of course that it’s been golden master for almost three weeks now, yes? Why just a preview?”

Just like with iOS7 at the iPhone event, which had also been GM’d a couple weeks before. Just a quick reminder rundown of features- very fast.

The other exciting thing to watch for will be a 4K Cinema Display from Apple. It doesn’t make much sense for them to release a machine with 4K features and then have them ceed the display to ASUS or Samsung. But make no mistake, if they do release one- it ain’t gonna be cheap. Comparable 4K Monitors are about $3500. It will be like the 30″ Cinema Display all over again!

[Andy Branner] “Professional? Clearly yes by those standards! Technically “acceptable” or “feature-rich”?? By what standard? … and why should he care?”

That makes him a professional – as in he’s earning money. It does not make him a professional EDITOR, which was the relevance of the PVC post. I know lots of directors and DPs dabbling with it. That’s a completely different yardstick. So there you are correct. Until those people have a need to interface with professional editors or post facilities, X will stay within that closed circle. Until the two circles overlap, one will have no impact on the other.

[Andy Branner] “Or have you EVER used the “Event Viewer” window? I sure haven’t (and don’t think they should have given in to it… at least not that way). ;)”

Yes – a few times for matching color corrections. I make a compound of a corrected clip and then display it in the event viewer next to the clip I am correcting.

Apart from that I find it a pretty redundant feature and with no skimming a definite step backwards towards FCP7.

Tracks would be a fundamental change in how the timeline works. Tracks = no connected clips, no magnetic timeline. Complete reversal of the current version.

Color wheels are just a different UI for the same function. You’re right they may not- but if they were just another tab in the color board along with levels and curves, it wouldn’t bother me.

I mentally have budgeted about 10-12K for a new system including MacPro and Display. If it’s less I’ll be thrilled. But that’s how much my startup MacPro G5Quad setup cost me in 2006.

I don’t think they’ll be able to get it that low. With at least 512GB SSD, minimum 8-16GB of RAM, and dual GPUs– but we’ll know for sure in a couple of days.

[Andy Branner] ” Moving the goal posts to fit your argument. “

IMO it’s not moving the goal posts but focusing on a specific subset because the umbrella term ‘professional’ is so broad and varied that having meaningful discussions about the applicability of hardware and/or software is impossible. It’s like trying to find common ground between taxi drivers, race car drivers and long haul truckers. They all make their living behind the wheel but they all have very different (and many times opposing) needs.

That’s not to say people can’t be biased, but I think we have to keep in mind the prism through which people are looking at products (while also keeping in mind that our own needs do not necessarily represent the needs of others).

[Ronny Courtens] “The guy says about FCPX (quote) “the times I’ve used it have been few and far between.”

Is this the same guy who is listed as a Cow Master in the FCPX Techniques forum? LMAO!!”

I appreciate the irony, but you should also know that Kevin has no control over where or how his face shows up in the cow faces. I had nothing to do with getting my face posted above in this forum, other than posting frequently and passionately for a long time. I’ve also seen my face show up in forums that I didn’t really feel apart of.

If you see your face appearing here and you don’t want it to, just click on your photo and select Remove. You have full control over this.
