FCPX importing failure
hi, so I recently downloaded the new version of FCP, looks great but now I have a problem importing my miniDV clips from my panasonic HVX200A. FCPX won’t detect the camera, well technically, it didn’t, then it didn’t, now it won’t. So I went back and opened my older version of FCP(6) and tried the log and capture like I always did, but when I do that this pops up “Unable to initialize video deck”. So it makes me wonder if thats what FCPX is doing too in not being able to initialize the video deck. So i turned off the camera, reboot the system, opened FCPX again and still no detection. My camera is 2 weeks old so I highy doubt anything burned out or malfunctioned. But someone please help

Are you recording to tape or P2? How are you connecting the camera to the computer?

I am recording to Tape and connected via FW 800

Are you using an FW800 adapter on a FW400 6pin to 4 pin cable? I would try using a different cable first and then testing your firewire ports with other devices. FW ports are supposed to be hot-swappable but I never do it. I have seen several FW ports get blown that way. I have an HVX-200 available and hooked it up with a FW400 6 to 4 cable and it works fine with both tape and P2 under FCPX

I have an iMac that only has the FW 800 input and I am not using an adapter. I’m using a 1394 end cable to a FW 800. I was doing some research from different places and some were suggesting that it’s possible to have fried the FW port but I tried the port with my audio interface and it worked regularly. I highly doubt that the 1394 port on the camera got burnt but there is no way for me to tell at the point. I also read that you should turn the camera off before unplugging or plugging in … I did not do this instead the camera was on when I plugged in the FW to the iMac but it was working fine with FCP 6 but FCPX is not detecting and I don’t know why and now neither is detecting the camera

Sounds like a blown port on the camera to me. You didn’t use the cable with the ferrite core?

nope, BTW when you connected you HVX are you using the same cable as me(1394 to FW800). and if so, does FCPX automatically detects you camera when you click the “import from camera”?

Do you have P2 cards in your camera? Can you mount them? If not its most likely the cable or the camera’s FW port.

So i decided to assume that it was the port on the camera that was bad because the port on my iMac was working fine with another device, and I got my camera replaced with a brand new one. Opened FCPX and nothing happened, opened FCP 6 tried the log and capture and it still said “unable to initialize video deck,” So now im assuming that it may be the cable so im left to get that replaced now

So now i’ve done it all.. replaced the camera with a new one, changed the cable, and still FCPX does not detect the camera. Is there a setting that i have to set on this HVX200A to make the computer detect it

Is the “media” switch set to “tape” and camera in “vcr” mode?
