  • FCPX adds “(id)” to some clips on import – why oh why?

Sometimes FCPX adds “(id)” to the end of file names when imported. The name of the file is changed to the date of the file and “(id)” is added. For example:

    MVI_1234.mov becomes 2012-12-22 09_12_26 (id).mov

Any ideas why this happens and how to stop it?

This is annoying because if, for example, my assistant edits a project and then passes on the project to me, I have to manually link each of the renamed files if FCPX has renamed the files on import. If I have the original data in my event library and FCPX hasn’t changed the name of the files when my assistant has imported them then I can just easily relink to the project she has edited, without receiving her (often large) event library file, and FCPX will automatically connect all the files.

Incidentally, this seems to only happen upon the first import of files into a project. Has happened on multiple computers, too.

    Any advice much appreciated

    Chris

X doesn’t actually use the names you see in the finder for anything other than user display and user sort/search.

The actual clip IDs are deep in the metadata.

X has a robust batch re-naming function built into the Inspectors INFO Settings tab for display names that lets you batch create new ones anyway you like.

If you’re having significant issues with your EVENT files becoming disconnected from their source clips, it’s likely because you’re doing FINDER copying rather than using X’s preferred MOVE command – which keeps clips location and ID links intact at that deep metadata level.

MOVE is your friend with X projects. Embrace it. MOVE might seem to take more time than FINDER COPY, but thats because it’s doing the job RIGHT.

Bottom line: try NOT to do finder moving of stuff in X until you master how and where it wants to store and find things. X is simply NOT as rudimentary as Legacy in terms of asset linking and re-linking and it’s easy to do stuff in the Finder that messes with it’s database.

    FWIW

    Thanks for the helpful reply.

Will try and use the MOVE command in the application if possible.

Just discovered that FCPX only seems to change the name of the file and add the the “(id) ” tag to the file name in the finder on the very first batch of files imported into FCPX only.
