  • FCPS2 Install: replace old motion/soundtrack media?

Posted by Matt Devino on May 28, 2007 at 10:00 pm

    HI Everyone,
I have an older G5 dual 1.8, and I just got studio 2. The problem is a 46GB install is huge when all I have for a boot drive is a 75GB (remember when that was normal?). I have about 17GB available, and Studio 1 is installed on it with all of the Motion/Livetype/Soundtrack media. My question is does Studio 2 add an additional 46GB of information onto my drive or does it overwrite all of that old media that is already on my drive, essentially making it a smaller install than it seems? If the later is the case will my 17GB be enough or do I need to go get a new boot drive? Thanks.

The installer asked if I wanted to reinstall media that was already there, to which I said “yes”.

After I installed FCS 2, I noticed that there was some duplication of SoundTrack-related audio files in this directory:

    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple

Specifically, I noticed a folder called “Apple Loops”. I am guessing that this was there from the FCS 5.1/5.0 install.

The FCS 2 install put another “Apple Loops” folder in this location:

    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro/Apple Loops

This folder had the same sub-folders and files as the one in “/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple” but with additional sub-folders and files, so I took this as being the newer version.

If you say “no” when the installer asks you to re-install existing content, you should be okay. Or, you could say “yes” and remove the duplicates as I described above.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Dave

Thanks Dave. Do you know how much more drive space the new files take?

    Hmm… no, I don’t know…

One way for you to check. Use the application Pacifist to “look into” the installer packages for FCS 5.x and FCS 2, especially into individual packages. You can see how much size info is given that way, or extract pieces and check them via “Get Info” in the Finder.

Or, you could go throug the “ReadMe” file for FCS 2 and see what info is contained therein about content sizes or disk requirements. I recall seeing somewhere (Apple’s FCS Web pages) that installing all content media with all the apps in FCS 2 takes up a total of about 60 GB of disk space:

So my take on the install of FCS 2 is that the old soundtrack media is duplicated in a different location when the “Yes” button is checked…

and I will have to remove duplicate files by hand.

    What about motion…

does FCS 2 remove old template and other files from older motion ???

    thanks

I am not absolutely sure about this. On my system, this seems to have been the case. I would double-check it yourself.

I’m not sure where the Motion content is stored.
