I do this all the time with DVCPro HD sequences and haven’t had any issues with re-imported clips requiring rendering. If I have a particularly render intensive segment, I’ll do the same as you, export it as a self-contained movie and bring it back in. Don’t recall ever getting a render bar when doing this process in both 720 and 1080.
The clip should remain in the same DVCPro HD aspect ratio as the timeline. Really don’t have an answer as to why you have to render the clips, but it does work normally here.

August 18, 2007 at 8:11 pmSo, QT is changing the export to the full square-pixel size. Have you tried exporting only one clip from the timeline with current settings?

August 18, 2007 at 8:46 pmI exported them as DVCPRo HD or ProRes, whatever the timeline’s codec was. I always export a Quicktime Movie, and never a conversion. I tried both reference and self contained movies with equally fine results.
Looks like Walter’s a jerk now too. Way to go, Walter.

August 18, 2007 at 11:22 pmJerks all around.
Well, what gets me is that it DID work, and now doesn’t,a nd I didn’t change anything. AND it does this on TWO machines. I also tried with my laptop (FCP 5.1.4, QT 7.1.6, OS 10.4.10) and it too exports out 1280×720.
OK…fine…I’ll start playing with FCP 6 and see what IT does. After I am done with the slew of tests I am doing this weekend: Testing a RAID unit; capturing DVCPRO HD footage with the Decklink Multibridge, Kona LH and via firewire to see if ANYONE can really tell the difference (samples to be posted); Matrox DualHead2go to see if I can get two monitors AND the MXO to work on my G5.
Oh…and play with the kids and see friends from out of town…and finally go see Harry Potter…whew.

Latest and greatest. Just ran Software Update this past week so FCP 6.0.1, QT 7.2 and OS 10.4.10

That’s brave of you. No trouble with any other apps since you installed this?
I’m holding off for 7.2.1 😉 -

September 19, 2007 at 4:56 pmI guess my client used a different brand of camera on the angle that’s has been giving me this problem in FCP 2. Wonder if that would have any influence on the issue? Mixing camera brands?

September 19, 2007 at 11:40 pmWell, the only way I able to get a consitent frame size … was by checking the re-compress option, my batch export settings. I chose only to do this on sequence that was giving me problems. Because recompressing anything isn’t whats best … but it worked.

September 21, 2007 at 6:38 pmWe just started seeing this same problem with DVCPRO HD since we upgrade to FCP 6 (now running FCP 6.0.1 QT 7.2)
I’ve been running a lot of tests on it and find that some exports come back in fine and others come back in needing to be rendered. The only thing I’ve been able to find consistent is the clips that are brought back into the same sequence that need to be rendered, if you turn on Toggle Clip Keyframes they all have a blue bar showing FCP thinks they’ve had a speed change applied to them.
I’ve also seen other weird things with it. For example, there are two clips next to each other in a sequence. If I export them individually the exported clips come back into the sequence fine fine, but if I export them together it comes back in needing to be rendered.
One more thing I’m just now noticing. If I export a couple clips in a sequence the new clip comes back in fine. If I put a transition between two of the clips it comes back in saying it needs to be rendered, thinking it has had a speed change applied.
Not sure what any of it means, but thought I’d throw in what I’ve been seeing in hopes of finding a solution to the problem.
