FCPs’ DVCPro HD: 1920 or 1280????
Posted by J. Tad newberry on August 17, 2007 at 7:06 pmthe DVCPro HD easy setup sets the timeline sequence to 1280 x 1080. doing a render out from the timeline to the only DVCPro HD QT codec always yields a 1920 x 1080 clip. so when you put this clip back on an easy setup timeline (DVCPro HD @ 1280) it still has to be rendered.
i also tried a QT version using “Current Settings”, not selecting anything else there, and it came out the same as above (1920 x 1080).
anyone know why this is or whether there is a workaround for it?
thanks again!

August 17, 2007 at 7:21 pmMortimer, you seem to have been having all kinds of troubles lately.
1080 DVCPro HD has a native frame size of 1280×1080. Quicktime will play this back out @ 1920×1080, correcting for the square pixel aspect ratio.
Why are you reimporting?

August 17, 2007 at 7:30 pmJeremy…haven’t you figured this out yet? We TOLD you why we need to do this. This is a common thing to do, actually.
Before I output I export a self contained QT Movie, reimport that and THEN output. This way you have only one file to deal with…you can drop the Broadcast Safe filter on it if you need…or you can easily transport that file to a post facility to output, like I do.
AND as I stated before on the other long MORTIMER thread…I TOO am having this issue and have yet to resolve it. Worked fine one week, but not the next…no updates in between. Seems to point to user error with a situation like that, but I had someone else do the same thing on my system…same result.
Sorry that I don’t have an answer..I am seeking it too.
When exportinga QT movie it SHOULD go out as 1280×1080…but it isn’t. It used to, but now isn’t. That is the issue.

August 17, 2007 at 8:09 pmRight, got ya.
I will have to do some tests and see what I come up with, and then I’ll be able to post my own confusion as well.

August 17, 2007 at 8:25 pmyes, some have said i must’ve been struck by lightning a couple times…
my problems were few and far between when all i had to worry about was my trusty Betacam SP equipment. Beta is Beta. one flavor. one codec. i kind of miss those days.
the reason i’m doing the export here is that i’m wanting to render out one sequence which is to be inserted into a larger sequence, and then i’ll end up rendering out the whole thing as a single file (like what Shane was talking about) and going to an HDCam master. my only fear there is that i know i’m introducing an extra layer of compression on that sub-sequence, but the final render time speeds up dramatically. if i see a big difference on the HD screen, i’ll probably just go back to the old way of nesting an unrendered sequence within my main sequence and let ‘er go…
thanks again!

August 17, 2007 at 8:34 pmFYI..I can export DVCPRO 50 footage, and DV footage as QT movies and bring them back in and drop them in a timeline and they work fine. This ONLY happens with DVCPRO HD.
And the DVCPRO 50 footage is squeezed…so this makes NO sense whatsoever.

But DVCPRo HD gets recorded, and played back in quicktime at 720×480 no matter what. EVen the anamorphic material. What is happening with the DVCPro HD is that quicktime is trying to be too smart in what it does, and it’s now falling short by not being smart enough. Are your guys sequences FULLY rendered before export?

YOu mean DVCPRO 50, right? And yes, I know it is recorded at 720×480. But when I import that it is STILL 720×480…not stretched out to 800-something. It remains anamorphic.
DVCPRO HD is being exported and somehow CONVERTED to non-anamorphic. It is recorded at 960×720…yet exported as 1280×720, and reimported with that format.
Yes…fully rendered. I would say “hey, just who do you think you are TALKING TO mister,” But I know that I have done some stupid stuff in the past that you asked me about and I went “yeah yeah…I did that,” when in fact, I didn’t.

Totally. I figured you did, but I thought I’d ask. I am capturing right now, as soon as it’s done I am going to plop the whole capture in a timeline and export to see what I see.

August 17, 2007 at 8:55 pmAnd yes, I meant DV50. What I am saying is that, quicktime doesn’t try to get too smart with anamorphic SD. WIth anamorphic HD, it tries to get too smart and messes up along the way.

August 18, 2007 at 4:38 pmHey guys, how are ya? I had 3 timelines to work with in FCP 5.1.4 and FCP 6.0.1.
One DVCPro HD 720p23.98 timeline in FCP 5.1.4 that was 45 minutes long
One DVCPRo HD 720p23.98 timeline in FCP 5.1.4 that’s 2 hours long
One ProResHQ 720p23.98 timeline in FCP 6.0.1 that’s 2 hours long (Same footage as above, captured ProRes HQ)
I exported all of them and reimported and they all play as they should with no render bar.
