    Hi Everybody-

I’ve been reading that importing an FCPRO MOV file onto a PC isn’t possible… but I think it is! First off, I have to say that I’m not able to read or convert the file using Raylight or Cineform HDV. Both report that the video stream isn’t valid. However, when I change the extension to AVI, I can open it in Media Player.

But using the MOV or the AVI, Vegas reports an invalid video stream.

G-Spot Informant tells me it can be decoded with the Huffyuv codec, so I’m ASSuming that WMP can flip through codecs until it finds one it likes.

Can Vegas not do that? How can I tell Vegas which codec to use for a given file? Thank you for any help!

    Hi Craig

Are you saying you want to bring a *.MOV into Vegas? Yes you can. If you’re asking if you can import a *.FCP final cut project file, no you can’t. So what’s a FCPRO MOV?

I also use MBP and Final Cut Express. I’m colaborating on this project with a fellow who has Final Cut Pro 6 (Studio 2). We researched and tried everything including an XML file. So I’m workin on this project in FCe so we can swap project files. We both had copies of the same clips.

    Hi Allen-

Thank you for responding. I’m not talking about an FCP project, but an HD file rendered from FCP. The codec they’ve probably used is DVCPro, which appears as a MOV file, but is not readable by PC. See here: https://community.avid.com/forums/p/38930/217773.aspx and here: https://dvxuser.com/V6/archive/index.php/t-60871.html, where they say “While there is QT 7 for Macs and QT 7 for PCs, the particular codec Apple is using is specific to FCP installs, NOT to QT in general.”

This is, so far, correct. But I’ve been able to view the MOV file in Windows Media Player (albeit with no audio). However, Vegas claims there is no valid video stream in the file. So some codec must be reading it, and it looks like it’s the Huffyuv. But I can’t get Vegas to try different codecs, the way Media Player apparently does.

    Hi Craig
Oh, okay. Like AVI, the MOV is only a wrapper and can contain any one of a number of actual codecs.

There’s a program called G-spot. Google it. It’s free so download and it will tell you what codec it is. Then you can get that codec.

    Hi Allen-

Again, thank you for responding. My dilemma is not that I can’t identify the codec. I had mentioned in my first post that G-Spot tells me the Huffyuv will decode it. My dilemma is that Windows Media Player can find that codec, but Vegas can’t. WMP will play the file, but I cannot open it in Vegas.

So my question is, how can I tell Vegas to use a specific codec that I know already exists on my system?

    Hi Craig

Oooh! Well You got me stumped! Sorry. Hopefuly one of the other guru’s will jump in as I haven’t had any experience where Vegas wouldn’t play something.

Mean time, I suggest you search the forum maybe for “Huffyuv codec” and see if it hasn’t been discussed before.

Playing FCP dvcpro .mov is definitely possible in Vegas. You just need Raylight decoder. Decoder will enable you to read dvcpro50 and dvcprohd. If you need to render out to these formats you will need Raylight Encoder Pro. Encoder Pro will enable you to read and write dvcpro50 and dvcprohd. You can download the demo here. Decoder & EncoderPro

    Hope this helps,

    Hi-

You may not have seen the first post, where I mention that I’m not able to decode using Raylight. That may have something to do with the Raylight codec not overwriting the system preferences to be able to be the default codec for that file type.

So to reiterate, Raylight’s decoder is installed on the system, and WMP will view the file. But Vegas will not.

If you are still having trouble you may want to submit an online support request . There support is good even if you are running the demo.

    Hope this is helpful,
