FCP/FCX Boot Question
So I want to run FCX and FCP side by side. I’ve read all the best practices documents. I plan to install FCX on a separate internal hard drive that I currently use just to store all my projects.
First question… if I install FCX on this drive do I still have to install MAC OS X on that drive? (I assume yes).
Second question… the I have to install the OS on that drive, HOW do I boot to that drive at startup?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1) yes. You can’t have FCPX on its own drive, it needs to have the OS on it.
2) Hold option at startup is one way. Choose the “startup disk” in system prefs is another.

just want ot say despite the whitesheet. Im running X and FCP 7 on the same drive and it works fine. Just made a new folder called Final Cut X and installed it to there and its all working fine.

And no issues running either version at all?

I have both FC7 and FCX running on the same drive and I have had absolutely no problems. You cannot have them both running at the same time.
Have to admit using FC7 less and less

Past problems way before the recent updates tend to screw up data used in both versions.
Now it doesnt.
However, keep FCPX at its latest version to avoid that.
Now this is on SL not Lion.

nope, I barely use X, but no issues on the surface, i use FCP 7 every other day with no problems at all.

I have both on the same systems and have no problems but run the other way these days. Rarely on 7; mostly on X. No issues. Well, definitely some beach balling with X but I attribute that to the relatively new nature of the beast.

I have a laptop that has both, and have had no issues either, but my main production machines have separate installs.

As I understand it, the real conflict comes with Motion. If you upgrade to the new Motion (Motion 4 & 5 don’t co-exist too well) you lose round-tripping in FCP7. But this is only hearsay as I do not have FCPX or Motion 5. Has this been fixed?

When you “Send to” Motion, just choose not to launch motion.
Then open the resulting motion project in 4 and not 5.
Once there, everything is fine, or at least that’s been my experience, but I rarely round trip to motion.
