  • FCP7 Sequence… How To Open In Both FCPX and Premiere Pro?

Posted by Jona Taylor on March 22, 2013 at 7:59 pm

Hello Folks… sorry if this repeats… I’m currently searching for the correct info and thought it smart to post here as well.

My 2008 Macbook Pro died (logic board). It was connected through eSATA to a 5 bay enclosure and I was organizing and beginning the edit (FPC7) on a film that I shot in India over the past 4 years.

I’ve bought a new Macbook Pro 2.7Ghz (OS 10.8.3) but it will not let me instal FCP7 (dmg) so I can not open the previous FCP projects.

I have FCPX installed but it won’t open the previous FCP sequences. I also have CS6 installed. I want to try both programs to get a feel for them and then select one as my standard.

Would someone kindly chime in here and help point the way so that I can continue with this wonderful (and frustrating ;)) process?

    Looking forward… 🙂

Well, to get a project from FCP 7 to FCX you need 7toX from intelligentassistance.com

    https://www.philiphodgetts.com/2012/01/7tox-for-final-cut-pro/

To get from FCP to PPro CS6, export an XML and import that XML in CS6

    Wonderful Shane!

One more question? Suppose I used a friend’s mac (FCP6-7) to export my FCP7 sequence as an XML… would FCPX be able to read it?

    Huge thanks 🙂

    Best regards,

No. FCX cannot import a project or sequence from FCP without 7toX.

    Period.

    End of line.

“Good new and bad news. The good news is that you can easily do what Shane points out above. The bad news is that you need to open the project in FCP 7 to export the XML that’s necessary for either importing to Pr or using 7toX to get it into X. You don’t need the media online to do it, perhaps you have a friend who could open the project and export XML for the sequence(s) you’d like to open?”

    Hey Charlie (Shane)
So then I actually have to find a Mac with FCP7 on it so that I can open my project and export an XML file. Correct?
My friend is running FCP6. Will this work?

    @Neil
I’m not sure why either. I think I have read that my Mac’s HDD would have to partitioned to run both FCP7 and FCPX on the same Mac. When I go to instal FCP7 the little FCP box is greyed-out. FCPX and PP6 is already on the system.

6 won’t work, since your project is newer (7) it won’t open. You don’t need to partition, they just can’t both run at the same time. I’m not sure why you can’t install either, i just installed 7 on a brand new machine. I used a new FCP studio (FCP 7.0.3) install DVD though. I read somewhere that some of the older installers used PPC code, and that won’t work on OS X lion and above. 🙁

    – Yes, and I… I continue wrestling with these silly dmg files now that my new Macbook does not have a DVD burner.

As I don’t have a concrete answer yet, I am just going to assume that I need FCP7 to export an XML file so that I can use: https://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/7toX/ to get the file to FCPX. Would still like to know this for sure if anyone can say for sure.

Very much appreciate you chiming in here 🙂

    Yes. For sure. 🙂
