  • FCP6, the culprit of Quad-core crashing??

    Hi all,

I just bought FCP Studio 2, alongside a new Quad-Core Mac Pro (2, 3 GHz processors). I’m capturing HDV footage shot in 24F with a Canon XH-G1, using a Canon HV10 as my deck. I had no problems during FCP installation. Due to the nature of my footage, I’m using the Capture Now function. The first 4, 63-min tapes captured flawlessly, but when I got to the fifth, buggy things began to happen. First, Final Cut started quitting unexpectedly during capture. Secondly, immediately following a fairly lengthly capture, the entire computer crashed and left me with a tan-patterned background on my monitor. I rebooted, began capturing again, and then at the end of a capture, the screen froze. Also, I’m running everything off of a 500-gig internal SATA drive, and according to FCP, I still have about 360-gigs of free space left. Now, who do you think is the culprit?

    A) Final Cut
    B) Running the application and storing the media on a single hard drive
    C) Corrupt media from my tapes (I was shooting on brand-new, Sony HDV tapes)
    D) Something’s up with my Final Cut settings
    -or-
    E) Something I haven’t thought of

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks COWers!!

    Cathy,

If you’re running everything off of the system drive that won’t work. FCP requires separate drives for media. The main system drive is busy running applications and the opertaing system.

    David: Are u sure? U probably are….

    But:

Shes grabbing SD DV to an internal drive….

I grab bigger loads than she describes – sometimes to internal drives on my MBP even……

Sorry – allthough most of us use external drives formost things – I just dont se that her setup wouldnt be able to handle what she describes…..

Allthough it would be great to hear how it turns out with an extra drive…

( And Yes, i know the tech recommendations – in not using the system drive… but SD… really? )

No, she’s capturing HDV to the system drive. Big difference. Even though HDV file sizes are the same as DV, the information is not stored the same way, its MPEG long GOP, and it requires processing and scaling on the fly to display on-screen during the capture process. That’s much more taxing on drive throughput than capturing standard DV.

It may work some of the time, but its certainly not reliable. And, with 500gb SATA drives available for $120 (see Newegg.com), its certainly not worth thinking about.

Thanks, David — I thought perhaps that was the problem — I have a friend who’s an audio engineer, and she warned me that I may have this problem, as the same thing happens w/ Pro Tools. I’ll definitely buy an extra 500-gig drive and transfer my media. I’m surprised Apple doesn’t mention that minor detail in their system requirements for FCP Studio.

If you read the setup guides in the FCP manual, use of dedicated media drives is pretty clearly stated.

Ah well, they should mention it in their system requirements on the FCP product information page of their website. That’s what I based my custom Mac Pro configuration off of, since I was purchasing both FCP Studio and my computer at the same time.

Those are MINIMUM system requirements you read about. It’s up to you to make sure your system is properly set up for your needs.
