October 29, 2013 at 3:38 pmLike Walter said, format is really relevant. If it wasn’t prores it would be impressive otherwise is already doable in Premiere CC and a powerfull PC from last year.
A lot of people never looked outside Apple and FCPX, but the world kept going. It’s nice to have a powerfull mid range option with the new MacPro, but it is not a revolution, a speed breakthrough. It is the most powerfull choice if you use FCPX, that’s for sure, and you should be happy indeed.

October 29, 2013 at 3:55 pmHave you actually tried Premiere CC on a powerfull machine? Do you know about the different resolutions you can use to display the program monitor? I’ve been editing native 4k since i bought my first Red One in 2009.

October 29, 2013 at 4:29 pm[Andy Branner] “Well, it’s now been established that in fact “Streaming tests [were] conducted using a 10-minute project with 16 unique 3840x2160p23.98 ProRes 422 clips.” No Proxy.”
Which is very impressive and even more confusing in that their marketing material proudly brags about playing 3 streams of 4K. If your gonna bang your drum wouldn’t you prefer to say 16 streams?

October 29, 2013 at 4:40 pmI just want to go on record and say, if anyone thinks the FCPX debate is over and this forum has no purpose they should read this thread.
To your corners, gentleman, and come out swinging.

LOL! Fanboy alert, i just made this with my old workstation, dual quad, no HT, 16Gb of ram, Nvidia Quadro CX, internal 5TB raid in Premiere CC, windows 8.1. It is in fact a 3 year old machine, nothing special. The clips are old Red One .r3d, not prores or dnxhd, all 4K.
Andy, if you please, share your FACTS.
Hilarious, isn’t it?

October 29, 2013 at 4:54 pmI think it’s important to acknowledge that all of the Apple Benchmark figures being discussed in this thread have been carried out on a comprehensively specked out Mac Pro:
” Testing conducted by Apple in October 2013 using pre-production Mac Pro 12-core 2.7GHz units with 1TB flash storage and AMD FirePro D700 graphics, and shipping Mac Pro 12-core 3.06GHz units with 512GB SSD and ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics. All systems configured with 64GB of RAM. Tested with pre-release OS X 10.9 and pre-release Final Cut Pro X. Colour correction, render and optical flow retiming tests conducted using a 3840x2160p29.97 ProRes 4444 project. Streaming tests conducted using a 10-minute project with 16 unique 3840x2160p23.98 ProRes 422 clips. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of Mac Pro. ”
Prices and availability for the 12 core machine with AMD D700 graphics and 64GB ram machine have yet to be announced. From what’s been announced so far probably around $6K.

October 29, 2013 at 4:59 pm[Andy Branner] “Just for clarification: that being one of the lines that I don’t get and (rightly so?) lead me to think your whole point was to attempt to put the demo off as some sort of “Yeah… been there, done that” scenario, just based on the codec.”
If we can’t agree that playing 16 streams of quarter-res ProRes Proxy says something totally different about the system than playing 16 streams of 4K ProRes 422, and that says something different than playing 16 streams of 4K XAVC, and that say something different than playing 16 streams of 4K REDCODE, then I just don’t know how to proceed with you.
You can think whatever you like about me and my motives, but I am not trying to tear this thing down. I’ve got both Macs and PCs in my little shop, and I am very interested in the new Mac Pro. I just want to keep it real, and I think context matters.

Here’s some more light on that subject, just in case you missed it: https://architosh.com/2013/10/the-mac-pro-so-whats-a-d300-d500-and-d700-anyway-we-have-answers/
They speculate that the dual D700s could potentially be $6,000 just by themselves.

October 29, 2013 at 5:48 pmI’m using 5 1TB 7200 rpm hdds in Raid 0. They raid is configured under windows, not with a PCI card. Mind you, .r3ds are 36mb/sec. How’s that got to do with anything? Tell me please.
I don’t think you are all complete morons, but you were really agressive, calling me a Troll, saying that what i say is BS. I made that video just to show you. You said you knew that was impossible, that you had facts. So, tell me the FACTS. otherwise you are just plain dumb.

Yes. Andy apparently has some rather severe social issues.
