    BG: Generators in FCP X

    “BG Frame of Thought”

This is an FCP X Generator.

This is most likely the most simple preset you will come across. No really… It performs a Hold frame / Freeze frame on the frame of your choosing.

FCP X Generator: BG Frame of Thought

Are you feeling as underwhelmed as I am? … Sorry I cannot dress it up any more than what it is 😉

It’s not supposed to be able to be published to FCP but with a simple workaround it can be.

    – Choose your source footage
    – Choose your freeze frame

    Screenshots:

Drop the folder inside this zip called BG Frame of Thought into the following directory:

Movies / Motion Templates / Generators / BG Generators /

Please refer to the README inside the zip file for full installation instructions.

    Cheers,

    BG

    Interesting copy protection method!

That workaround is the kind of thing that will be fixed in the next revision. I think I’ll keep version 5.0 just in case.

    I have a request!

Could you produce a version that publishes the Fit parameter?

That would help people who want to choose which page of a PDF to show.

    Cheers,

    Alex

    Copy protection method?

    You’ve lost me.

Although I have noticed that trying to edit any effects that have had re-timing behaviours parameters published can result in some quite instant crashes of Motion.

Is that what you are referring to?

    Cheers,

    Brendan

Do you mean the Page Number slider?

I tried that one out a few weeks back, but no matter what type (generator, effect or title) the page number parameter would never seem to pick up the PDF in the timeline of FCP X. The slider can be published, but it would not detect the number of pages in the pdf.

Bizarrely it would work fine if you left a pdf inside the effect you published. Which is fine just as long you only use that same pdf over and over and over again 😉

Any idea why retiming behaviors don’t wortk with Effects but do work with Generators? Not sure I can quite follow the logic of this …

I did get it to work once, I say work…. I was able to publish it, but then applying the effect in fcpx caused an instance crash….

Be good if things were a little more consistent.

That’s a shame. (I can’t even get it to “accept” a Hold behavior a within Motion Effect project let alone publish it.)

And it doesn’t really make sense that retiming shouldn’t be available within Effects, does it?

The way I stumbled upon to get retiming behaviors to attach inside a motion effect template, was to import any video clip, attach retiming behavior, make it a dropzone then clear the media from the dropzone.

It then publishes fine, but apply the effect in X and you get an instant crash.

I tried publishing it with a 1frame media clip hoping you could just clear the dropzone in x, but to no avail.

Retiming behaviors being available in x would be helpful in soo many ways.

    Cheers,

    Bg

Thanks for the explanation. I have to admire your considerable cunning in getting that far – too bad it didn’t work out!
