FCP won’t shut down
I’m out of answers here. I have a dual processor brand spankin’ new G5 and FCP 5 won’t close. When I log and capture and it hits a timecode break I get the beach ball. But nothing I do will close the program so I have to unplug the computer to shut it down. So really nothing is saved, though sometimes it saves a quicktime file.
Also I was trying earlier to log and capture a (admittedly somewhat defective-it had digital breakup) tape. I tried everything I knew to skip over what FCP thought was a time code break but there really was none. So I dubbed the tape thinking I could create a solid timecode that FCP would take. No luck. It tries to break the clip into a hundred pieces and then stops the Log & Capture (beach ball again). I really don’t know what to do next except pull my hair out.
BTW: I have select in preferences – digitize across time code breaks.
Power Mac G5/Dual 2.3 ghz/ 2.5 GB ddr2 SDRAM. -

Did you tried “Force-Quit”?
Hold down Apple-Option-Esc then choose the app you want to “Force-Quit”.
Don’t know why you’re having capture trouble.
Have you tried another PLAYBACK unit (camcorder or deck)? -
That’s the least of my worries! That action I’ve tried at least 50 times. This is one problem but the real problem is that final cut won’t log a tape with a solid time code and after every attempt I get the beach ball.

There are several ways to force quit an app but if you can't get them to work, this will help suggest some other debugging operations. Application switcher? Dock? Apple menu? control-option-esc (or is it option-commnad-esc?) Activity Monitor open while you're trying to work? bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Yup, that’s the one. If you need to do a hard reboot (aka shutdown), just hold down the power button till the mac shuts off, then wait maybe 20-40 seconds & turn it back on. you should avoid pulling the plug on any running computer if you have any other option to shut it down.

To what hard drive are you trying to capture?
Is is internal?
Is it a drive other than the one that contains your Mac system and FCP app?Have you tried using a different deck or camcorder connected to the Mac?
DO YOU HAVE >> NORTON’S << RUNNING ON YOUR MAC??? (This is a big no-no.)

I’ve really only tried command/option escape and unplugging. I would rather NOT do this but I really am more worried about my project and diagnosing whether the problem is with FCP or Tiger or something else. Like I said I tried using another device to log and capture from (a PD150) and came up with the same problems. I dubbed the tape straight through and FCP still kept detecting time code breaks. Today I tried the “assembled” (dubbed) tape on another computer and that computer picked up one time code break and then had no problem with the rest of the capture. All other software on my G5 allows me to force quit. Only FCP5 gives me trouble. My next idea is to capture with an older powerbook on 10.1 and FCP3 and then send the file over to the G5. Of course that still doesn’t solve the problem of having $4000 dollars worth of computer and software that can now double as a shoebox because it won’t work with FCP. Please give me reason to go on!
