FCP with Motion to Color
Posted by Sam White on March 15, 2009 at 9:57 pmI have a sequence in FCP 6 where some of the clips have been edited in motion 3 via the send to motion function. I want to send the sequence to color for the grade but all the clips that have been edited in motion are missing. Is this normal? It seems stupid to have to export them from motion then bring them back in that way.
any ideas guysthanks

March 15, 2009 at 10:00 pmColor doesn’t read motion files (as I’m sure you’ve noticed). I don’t know a better way if there is one, But I usually just export the motion files from FCP with quicktime (make file self contained). Then add them back into the sequence.
hopefully that helps.

March 15, 2009 at 10:22 pmAre they rendered in the Animation codec or animation with alpha? If so, those are not supported in Color.

March 15, 2009 at 10:24 pmOh wait, you just sent the project to FCP instead of rendering them out as self contained movies? You can’t send those to Color. They have to be self contained movies and they cannot be Animation or Animation with Alpha.

March 15, 2009 at 10:31 pmThanks for the reply,
So I have to export from motion with the same codec as the FCP timeline then bring them back into Final Cut. Thats ok but I love the send to motion workflow. Would be awesome if it did work.
Thanks Again Walt

As of right now it doesn’t and I don’t think it ever will. Color requires an actual quicktime clip. If you’re doing the Send to Final Cut deal, you could probably just export a self contained movie of the clip from FCP if you want.

March 16, 2009 at 2:11 pmWhy export your Motion clips from Motion separately? Why not export your sequence from FCP then go into Color?

You don’t want to send a single clip into Color. It’s impossible to grade an entire timeline from one quicktime file.
You export the clips from Motion so they show up as individual shots in Color. Then you Send to Color from FCP to do your color grading.

June 7, 2009 at 8:05 amI’ve been trying to tacking this FCP/Motion/Color workflow too. I’ve read through the forums but am still confused.
If Color cannot take a file from Motion, and “it’s impossible to grade an entire timeline from one quicktime file,” Then what exactly is the workflow here?
It sounds like I need to “export selection” for every clip in Motion, then rebuild the FCP timeline with those clips, then “send to color.” is that correct? What if I utilize different blending modes in Motion, or use a behavior to transition from one clip to another?
Sorry for the lengthy question, I hope someone can help clarify.
Thank you.
