  • FCP with Decklink HD will not digitize HDTV 1080 from Sony F500 VTR

I have an original decklink HD capture card with SDI I/O. I have a rented Sony HDCAM F500 deck for the weekend. I can not get FCP to digitize even a frame. All my QT, FCP, OSX and Decklink software is up to date and compatible with one another acording to Decklink’s website.

The capture tool shows no video input. I am conecting via SDI from the HD output of the deck to the SDI input on the card, the capture settings are set to the HD format I need to work in, 23.98 PsF. I get the error mesage when I select the setting I want: Unable to locate the capture device Blackmagic HDTV 1080. Your system config may have changed or your deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off.

I am able to control the deck, log clips etc. I can see video comming through in SD mode using the downconvert SDI output from the deck, but not HD video from the SDI HD output from the deck.

I have no idea if its a deck issue, which I doubt, a decklink issue or a FCP issue. Even thought it could be a cable issue, but the cable I am using is a SDI bnc cable 70ohm, very short in length and should be enough.

The deck is also not seeing any input from the decklink card and I am sending it black using the send black durring capture mode option in the System Prefrences.

My decklink Prefrence settings are as follows…
Output: All Outputs Active (Enable Dual Link 4:4:4 Out is greyed out and off)
Input: SDI Video & SDI Audio.
*note: these first two settings are the only available settings. There is also no Genlock Refrence Timing option on this card.
Enable HDTV UP/Down Converter settings are both OFF.
Set Black Video Out ot Deck when in Capture: Output: ON SDI DIGITIAL OUT
    NTSC Setup: 7.5 IRE
Enable Video Desktop: Set to DISABLED.
Set Video output Behavior: Single Field out when paused.
There are no changes in the VANC section that I have ever made, not sure what that is.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Fixed Issue, MOTU PCI-424 card not compatible with the Decklink HD card while in HD mode and will not display video or capture any frames. MOTU card was clocking down the bus to 64 MhZ! Also swapped ATTO UL4D card for Decklink HD, putting HD card in 133 slot. Everything in and out of the machine appears to be working fine now.

    Hi,

I’m glad to hear you worked out the problem and found a solution. The DeckLink HD card is a PCI-X card that needs to run at 100 or 133 MHz. Slots 2 & 3 in the G5 share a 100 MHz PCI-X bus and it will only run as fast as the speed of the slower of the two cards. In this case, the MOTU card was slowing down the bus to PCI speeds and then prevented the DeckLink HD from working in HD.

It may be that the ATTO UL4D and the DeckLink HD would work adequately together as they are both PCI-X cards. However installing the DeckLink HD in slot 4 would guarantee it had enough speed for working in HD as well as SD.

Thanks for posting the problem and the solution which will help others.
